The second round of the singles draws in the French Open get underway around the Roland Garros complex on Wednesday as the second Grand Slam title of the year continues at a quicker pace than we’ve seen thus far in the tournament.
With many of the big names navigating the opening round we are pushing towards a number of decent matches later in the event, and some of them come up on what looks like a good looking schedule on Wednesday.
Day 3 Recap
The majority of the big names had played earlier in the week but the three out and out superstars on the main court all had to come through deciding sets and rollercoaster rides. Alexander Zverev was the first one. He led 2-0 but was forced to a decider by John Millman before coming through. Both Naomi Osaka and Simona Halep dropped a set on their way into the second round too. Fabio Fognini won in four sets as did Juan Martin del Potro on a day where the standout players all made it through.
It was an annoying first round from start to finish for us with three days of nearly making a profit and only coming out with a slight loss. That was the case on Tuesday too as we safely landed our men’s bet when Dan Evans took Fernando Verdasco to a fourth set comfortably seeing us beyond 33.5 games but despite cruising to the first set Anett Kontaveit then lost to set us back further in the event.
Philippe Chatrier Court
The beaten finalist of a year ago has the honour of opening up play on the main court on Wednesday as Sloane Stephens takes on Sara Sorribes Tormo from Spain. The second match on court looks like being a cracker as Kei Nishikori goes up against the home hero Jo-Wilfried Tsonga before Roger Federer gets to be the centre of attention once again. He faces Oscar Otte of Germany and then the action on Chatrier concludes with the form horse in the women’s game, Kiki Bertens, going up against Viktoria Kozmova for a place in the third round.
Suzanne Lenglen Court
There is an all-Ukrainian battle to start things off on the Suzanne Lenglen Court as Elina Svitolina takes on her compatriot Kateryna Kozlova before the defending men’s champion Rafael Nadal makes a surprise appearance to this court. He faces Yannick Maden in a match which has the potential to be more than a little one-sided. Petra Martic then continues her quest for the title when she faces the home star Kiki Mladenovic before two more Frenchmen round off the day when Benoit Paire meets Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
Simonne Mathieu Court
Some really good matches take place out on this court once again and they begin with the Greek rising star Stefanos Tsitsipas taking on Hugo Dellien of Bolivia. Karolina Pliskova is then on court when she faces Kristina Kucova before a real juicy match up between Grigor Dimitrov and Marin Cilic. This might not be the epic contest it would have been a few years ago but it still creates a decent second round clash. Belinda Bencic then closes the show when she takes on Laura Siegemund in another high quality looking encounter.
Best of the Rest
Former champion Garbine Muguruza is among the top level players who will be dotted about on the outside courts on Wednesday. She is on Court 1 while Stan Wawrinka, Richard Gasquet and the British number one Jo Konta will all be on show out in the Bullring too. David Goffin, Guido Pella, Anastasija Sevastova, Diego Schwartzman, Donna Vekic and Alex De miaur are just some of the other players with a seeding next to their name who can be seen on some of the lesser courts over the course of the day.
Men’s Betting
There are a couple of matches in the men’s draw which I think could have more mileage than the bookmakers seem to expect. The first of those is the one between Matteo Berrettini and Casper Ruud which should actually be a corking contest. Both these men have run hot on clay this season with Berrettini winning a title in Budapest while Ruud went deep in a couple of the lesser events. Both had good wins in the opening round here and look to be hitting the ball nicely so I think we’re going four deep sets in this one if not all the way to a decider. Over 37.5 games looks the way forward in this one.
It also looks the way forward in the mouth-watering match between Stan Wawrinka and the upcoming Chilean player Cristian Garin, the man who has flown up the rankings courtesy of clay court titles in Munich, where he saw off Alexander Zverev, and Houston and he was a win away from winning in Brazil too so he is on a real hot streak on the dirt at the minute. You get the impression Wawrinka is here to fight and he is likely to have to do plenty of that here. I think we’re on for another excellent, exciting match and although the game line is one higher here I still think it covers.
Women’s Betting
Just one match and bet catches my eye in the women’s draw on Wednesday which sees the local star Kiki Mladenovic in action against Petra Martic and I think the home crowds in Paris will be cheering at the end of this one. Mladenovic was quick to swoop for Naomi Osaka’s discarded coach and that already looks to be a fantastic move. I expect her singles play to come on leaps and bounds as this tournament progresses under new stewardship.
Martic is enjoying a fine campaign on the clay but these two met in Istanbul recently and Mladenovic only went down in a deciding set tiebreak so it was a close battle throughout and I see no reason why this one won’t be either. The difference here however could very well be that Mladenovic has the home crowd behind her in this match and at even money in what looks like close to a 50:50 match based on their Istanbul encounter, I’ll side with the French woman in this one.
