2019 French Open Tennis – Day 5 Betting Preview

The second round of the singles action at the French Open comes to an end inside the courts at Roland Garros in Paris on Thursday as the tournament continues to get towards the spot where seeded players can meet.

By and large the truly big names all remain in the competition so we are going to get some great matches between now and the end of the tournament and some of them come up among the action on Thursday.

Day 4 Recap

It was another day where the bigger names breezed through with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal not even looking like dropping a set while in the women’s draw there were comfortable wins for Sloane Stephens and Karolina Pliskova among others. We did lose the likes of Marin Cilic and Kiki Bertens however with the latter being forced to withdraw through illness.

It was a wipe out day for us betting wise. One of those days where players got on a real surge and never relinquished the advantage which is rare in clay court tennis but not a good combination when two of the three bets were on overs in games. In the women’s match we were on Kiki Mladenovic never got going and was soundly beaten.

Philippe Chatrier Court

The 2018 beaten finalist Dominic Thiem is up first on the main show court when the Austrian star takes on Alexander Bublik before Belinda Bencic and Laura Siegemund conclude their heldover match from Wednesday evening which is tied at 4-4 in the third set. Serena Williams is then on court when she faces Kurumi Nara of Japan. It is French stars all the way for the remainder of the day when Caroline Garcia takes on Anna Blinkova before the action concludes with Lucas Pouille going up against Martin Klizan.

Suzanne Lenglen Court

Both the world number ones are on the second court on Thursday with the women’s version opening up the show when Naomi Osaka takes on the former Grand Slam winner Viktoria Azarenka before Novak Djokovic is back on court. He faces Henri Laaksonen of Switzerland. Two Frenchmen then get tasked with entertaining the home crowd when Adrian Mannarino goes up against Gael Monfils before the action on the secondary court concludes with the defending women’s champion Simona Halep on show against Magda Linette.

Simonne Mathieu Court

Sam Stosur is the main attraction in the opening match on the new court on Thursday when she faces Ekaterina Alexandrova before the latest chapter of the Alexander Zverev crazy Grand Slam fortunes is played out. He meets Mikael Ymer and then comes the popular Argentine player Juan Martin del Potro who goes up against Yoshihito Nishioka. The last match on this court sees the former US Open finalist Madison Keys going up against Priscilla Hon.

Best of the Rest

The singles matches on the outside courts are beginning to get a little few and far between which means most of the big names are in the arena courts but there is still Aryna Sabalenka, Ashleigh Barty, Fernando Verdasco, Fabio Fognini, Karen Khachanov, Maria Sakkari, Kyle Edmund and Gilles Simon on show with a few other seeds dotted around the place on a decent looking day of tennis.

Men’s Betting

I like three bets over the course of the action on Thursday with the first of them coming in the form of over 37.5 games when Pablo Cuevas takes on Kyle Edmund. Edmund had to go five sets in the first round but he looked fresh enough and should take a lot of confidence away from a rare victory in recent times. He is up against it here against Cuevas but given the wretched form of the Briton I sense he is playing with the freedom of no expectation here. Cuevas is a solid clay court player who it is hard to see him capsizing in straight sets and Edmund serves well enough in the main to make sets close. I fancy four sets here so over 37.5 games looks the natural play.

Alexander Zverev never does anything the easy way as we saw in the first round and Mikael Ymer can keep him honest on Thursday. These two played out a couple of tiebreak sets when they met on the hard courts in Stockholm a couple of years ago and while this is clay there is still enough in there to make me believe the Swede can run a couple of sets close or even nick one. The game line here is only 31.5 which looks on the low side given the likelihood of a tight set or two or a fourth set. The over looks the obvious play with Zverev surely having doubts after nearly blowing a 2-0 lead earlier in the week.

Lucas Pouille can give the French crowds something to cheer on Thursday when he faces Martin Klizan in the final match on the main court. Klizan has been having fitness issues for a while so the deeper Pouille takes this the further you would think he would pull away from his opponent. Pouille doesn’t have the best record against lefties but this isn’t a totally fit one so I’m taking the energy of the French ace to win the day here and for him to cover a moderate handicap.

Women’s Betting

Aryna Sabalenka felt like a vulnerable seed to me heading into this tournament and having seen her immediate section of the draw open right up there is even more pressure on her to deliver the goods here but a few wins in Strasbourg last week aside she hasn’t had a great clay court season unlike her opponent on Thursday Amanda Anisimova who has won in Bogota and pushed Kiki Bertens all the way in Rome just a couple of weeks ago. She was dominant in the first round and looks to be hitting the ball very sweetly indeed. I think at the prices 11/10 is a little bit of value on the American here.
