The last two quarter finals make up the schedule for the Grand Slam of Darts on Saturday evening in a session in which we will see four stars of the game looking to make it through to the semi-finals on Sunday afternoon.
Peter Wright and Glen Durrant made their way into the last four on Friday night and we will see which of Michael van Gerwen, Adrian Lewis, Gerwyn Price and Gary Anderson will complete the semi-final line up on Saturday.
Gerwyn Price vs Gary Anderson
The opening match of the night is a repeat of the controversial final of last year when Gary Anderson looks for revenge against the defending champion Gerwyn Price in a match where the conduct of both men will be under as much scrutiny as the darts that they throw.
Anything could happen here. I suspect that both men will be on their best behaviour here and we’ll see an extremely competitive darts match because neither of these will want to lose to the other such is the ill feeling between the two. Price has to be a favourite because Anderson is rediscovering his best still but I wouldn’t be surprised if we get a peak Anderson here.
I’m backing that to happen not in the match market but in the form of Anderson 180s where an 8.5 line looks on the low side to me. The longer his match with Robert Thornton went on the better he looked around the 60 and we all know what he can do when he gets into a flow. This one is surely going to be 16-12 or closer so we need on average one 180 every three legs. That is more than in Anderson’s range.
Michael van Gerwen vs Adrian Lewis
Once upon a time the next big rivalry in darts was billed as being between Michael van Gerwen and Adrian Lewis. It hasn’t played out that way with van Gerwen soaring to something special and Lewis falling away but they meet in the last of the quarter finals on Saturday night.
Both men looked good at times in their last 16 match and vulnerable in others so we could be set for an intriguing match here. I suspect the outcome will be all about the belief that Lewis has for this match. If he truly believes he can win we could be treated to something special. If he doesn’t we might get another one of those one-sided matches that MVG has enjoyed against ‘Jackpot’ recently.
You have to go back more than 2.5 years for the last time Lewis beat MVG. He has lost nine since then so you would think that the Dutchman will win but nothing he showed against Ian White in the previous round convinced me he is worth backing. Lewis getting 6.5 legs is tempting but I like over 15.5 180s. Lewis was peppering the 60 against Wade and MVG had a nice groove on it as well. I don’t think eight apiece is asking much of these two phenomenal scorers.
