The second round of the International Championship is the schedule for Tuesday’s play in the Chinese tournament, with all 16 matches taking place over the two sessions of action as we play down to the last 16.
With one or two exceptions, the big names have generally made it through to this stage of the competition, which sets up some excellent matches and some high quality battles to enjoy over the course of the day.
Morning Session
The winners of the last two ranking tournaments are on show for us on the main tables on Tuesday morning. The world champion Judd Trump may well headline the session, when he takes on the competent Scott Donaldson but it might be that the pick of the two matches comes on the other side of the divide where the Riga Masters winner Yan Bingtao looks to continue his fine form when he takes on Shaun Murphy, who produced a Houdini act in the previous round.
We have seven matches on the outside tables, with a couple of them in particular of significant appeal. Joe Perry takes on Stephen Maguire in a battle of seasoned campaigners while Stuart Bingham faces Graeme Dott in another. The defending champion Mark Allen is in action against Mark Davis, while Ali Carter and Kurt Maflin could produce a really good match. The other two games sees Jak Jones looking to build on his win over Mark Williams in the previous round when he meets Robert Milkins while Anthony McGill goes up against Dave Gilbert.
Afternoon Session
Ding Junhui will be the man the crowds flood into watch in the second session of the day, and he will be on one of the main tables as a result. The Chinese star faces his countryman Xiao Guodong in what should be a decent match while the other televised clash will see Ben Woollaston meeting the former champion Mark Selby, who is looking to revive his career after a disappointing couple of campaigns, although generally his struggles have been in the UK.
There are some huge names on the outside tables in this session. Liang Wenbo is one of them and he will take on Daniel Wells while John Higgins is also away from the spotlight. His opponent is Elliot Slessor. The biggest name of the lot is Neil Robertson and he’ll battle it out with Ricky Walden while the World Championship semi-finalist Gary Wilson takes on Luca Brecel. The other two matches have Kyren Wilson meeting Tom Ford and Andrew Higginson facing the current European Masters champion Jimmy Robertson.
Betting
I’m going to take a couple of outsiders to come through on Tuesday. Shaun Murphy came from 4-1 and 5-4 down to Yuan Sijun on Monday to deny me a winner but I’m not expecting lightning to strike twice here. I think Yan Bingtao beats him and I’m happy to be on him at the prices on offer. Bingtao is in great form after his exploits in Riga last week and has already come through a couple of matches here in decent enough order as well which is positive. Murphy produced one great comeback on Monday but the fact he had to do that suggests he is still struggling. I’m on Bingtao to get rid of him here.
Gary Wilson beat Luca Brecel in a World Championship epic a few months ago and I’m happy to be on him to repeat the feat at odds against. Wilson made it to the semi-final of the tournament at Sheffield and the cash he banked from that will have lifted a number of weights off his shoulders. Brecel tends to do his best work out in China but however you look at this the worst you can make it is 50:50 which makes the odds against on Wilson value. I actually think Wilson is the more reliable player in terms of an all-round game so I’m happy to take the value and back Wilson here, who looks to have a better than even chance in my eyes.
