2019 International Darts Open – Last 16 Tips and Betting Preview

The penultimate European Tour event of the year concludes on Sunday with the final stages of the International Darts Open takes place out on Riesa, and for a number of players it is a big day on the stage with spots in the European Championship up for grabs.

We saw plenty of shocks and surprises on Saturday so we have a number of players who will be looking for iconic outcomes in action on Sunday on what looks to be a wide open tournament now. The last 16 takes place in the afternoon with the rest of the event in the evening. As ever we won’t be able to preview the latter stages but we can look at the first part of the day.

First Four Matches

The Players Championship winner from last year gets the action underway on Sunday when Daryl Gurney takes to the stage. He meets the former world champion Steve Beaton before a current champion of the world gets stuck into the final day as Glen Durrant faces the home man Michael Rosenauer. UK Open champion Nathan Aspinall will look to take a step towards another big title in 2019 in the third match as he faces Ricky Evans before we head to the break with the defending champion Gerwyn Price looking to make the quarter finals. He faces Joe Murnan who has done well to come through thus far.

Later Four Matches

We come out of the break with what is without doubt the tie of the last 16 when Peter Wright takes on the recent winner in Austria, Mensur Suljovic. Adrian Lewis came through a tetchy match on Saturday and will go up against Jonny Clayton for a place in the last eight on Sunday afternoon before Joe Cullen continues his quest for successive European Tour titles when he meets Rob Cross. The final match of the afternoon is a big one for both Richard North and Steve West as they look to take advantage of a soft last 16 draw when they round off the session.

Betting

I’ll take a couple of bets in this afternoon session. The first of those comes in the form of Jonny Clayton who I think can see off Adrian Lewis. I took on Lewis on Saturday and couldn’t believe my luck when Jackpot saw off William O’Connor with an 81 average. That sort of nonsense doesn’t get it done on Sunday’s in these things anymore so barring a massive improvement from Lewis he is going to get knocked out here. Clayton was impressive on Saturday actually. He averaged 95 against a home man who had the crowd on his side and I always think the Welshman is much more comfortable as the outsider. That is the case here so based on that and what we saw on Saturday, he has to be the bet in this one.

Richard North had a fine win over Ian White on Saturday evening but it was the 6-3 win Steve West produced against Jamie Hughes which caught my eye in that session. West hit five 180s and averaged a shade under a ton in a very good performance from him. There must be something West likes about this tournament because he made the semi-final here a year ago and looks to be in decent nick again here. North is competent but lacks that extra gear that West has and I think that can be the difference here.
