The Mzansi Super League continues on Saturday and after the damp squib of a washout on Friday afternoon, it will be good to get the action going again when the defending champions Jozi Stars take on the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants.
This is a huge match for the Stars who are winless in the first three matches of their title defence and really need to get up and running soon. The Bay Giants have a win and a no result from their two matches and are nicely positioned.
Jozi Stars
On the face of it, it looked like a well put together squad for the title defence of the Jozi Stars but the truth is they haven’t got going at all so far. They have lost all three matches that they have played and in truth they haven’t been too close in any of them. Twice they have been beaten by the Cape Town Blitz and they also lost the reverse fixture to the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants so this is heading towards a must win situation for them.
The big problem they have had so far this term is the amount of runs they are conceding. It is bordering on the extreme and if they don’t start stemming that then their title defence is going to be very short lived. It would help if the likes of Chris Gayle and a couple of the other batsmen start delivering the goods because two of them have more than 100 runs for the season but the highest anyone else has in three matches is 48 which isn’t good enough.
Nelson Mandela Bay Giants
I was a little unsure about the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants heading into the season but in the match and a bit they have played in the tournament they have looked very good which is encouraging. They have won one match quite comfortably and were well on top in the other before the rain came down and put paid to any changes they had of winning that one else there is a good chance they would have won two from two.
A win here will take the Bay Giants to the top of the fledgling table which could yet be a significant movement given the rain that is around this part of the world at the present time. There isn’t a lot they need to do differently to maintain their form and push on and go top of the table here. They looked strong in their one innings with the bat and have bowled well on both occasions they have had the ball in their hand.
Team News
Jozi Stars really need their two overseas players Chris Gayle and Dan Christian to start firing because they haven’t offer anything substantial to the competition to date. It remains to be seen if they change their bowlers around.
Nelson Mandela Bay Giants are showing no weakness to their side so barring any injuries or anything like that they are expected to keep the same side with Jason Roy and Ben Dunk carrying out their overseas duties.
Betting
I think what we’ve seen in the tournament to date the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants look the team to be on but I’m aware that there is no shortage of talent in this Jozi Stars side, even if they haven’t found form as a collective just yet. It can surely only be a matter of time before they do though and that is what puts me off getting involved in the visitors here, especially on this small ground.
I took the sixes in the first match here this season and that is the way I’m going to approach this game too. The line for this one is 13.5 which if this is the day Chris Gayle and Dan Christian do start teeing off won’t be nearly enough. There are plenty of clean hitters of the ball in the Bay Giants outfit too in the likes of Roy, Smuts, Behardien and Morris among others so with the ball flying further here than elsewhere and these short boundaries can lead to more than 13.5 sixes.
