Wednesday has arrived which means that the Mzansi Super League springs back into life and it does so with the top two in action when the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants host the Cape Town Blitz in a match which could be significant in terms of who goes straight through to the final.
Both sides have already set their stall out for the season so this is a match which will put one of them firmly in front as we head towards the halfway mark in the group stage of the competition.
Nelson Mandela Bay Giants
Although they sit second in the table going into the match, the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants are still undefeated in the tournament and had it not been for the rain in their second match they may well have been 100% so far too. The key behind the success of the Bay Giants so far has been their bowling attack. A side is yet to make 150 against them and when that is the case a team isn’t going to lose too many matches.
The flip side of that is the Bay Giants have only beaten the Jozi Stars this season. They are the defending champions but they have not been at the races in this competition thus far. It might be that the best guide on the home side will come in this match. That doesn’t mean we should write off their work so far, but maybe air on the side of caution over it going into this contest.
Cape Town Blitz
The Cape Town Blitz have won three of their four matches to date but there are a couple of issues that we can pick up on should we want to. The first one of those is that two of their three wins came against the Jozi Stars which as I’ve emphasised above isn’t the best form guide. The other concern is the defeat to the Paarl Rocks and in particular the margin of it. That showed that there is a Jekyll and Hyde nature to them.
The Blitz batting is decent enough and apart from one innings against Paarl has been in good order throughout the campaign so far an in truth their bowling has been good too. You would think their loss to the Rocks was a one-off but there is always that lingering doubt in the back of the mind until they show us otherwise. Given that, this is a pretty big match for the leaders, one which could earmark them out as genuine contenders.
Betting
I’m going to side with the home team here. I get that they have only beaten the Jozi Stars this season and that is not much of a form guide but they were all over the Tshwane Spartans in between those matches. What I like about the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants is that their five main bowlers are right on point. They all have wickets in the competition and the most any of them have gone for in terms of economy rate is 6.77 which is pretty incredible at this level.
There is a soft side to the Cape Town Blitz, as the Paarl Rocks exposed and that is sure to have the Bay Giants’ attention. To be fair markets revolving around a low scoring game could be options to explore but there is a lot of quality in the home batting and I’ve already highlighted the qualities they have with the ball. That is enough for a bet in my eyes.
