2019 World Open Snooker Qualifying – Day 2 Tips and Betting Preview

The World Open qualifying continues on Thursday as the latest bunch of players will head to the Barnsley Metrodome looking to find the one win that they need to book their spot on the plane to China at the end of the month.

We saw most of the seeded or higher ranked players come through on Wednesday and it will be interesting to see if that trend continues on Thursday or whether the lesser ranked men fight back and come through.

Morning Session

The World Championship semi-finalist Gary Wilson is one of the men in the first session of the day on Thursday. He is on one of the streamed tables too and will take on Mei Xiwen for a place in the final stages. The other streamed table has the Shootout champion Thepchaiya Un-Nooh taking on Jamie O’Neill for his own spot in the main draw. Three other matches take place in this session and they see Sunny Akani meeting Fan Zhengyi while Mark Joyce meets Xu Si. It could be that the match which is the biggest draw is the one between the two veterans when Anthony Hamilton takes on Jimmy White.

Afternoon Session

Shaun Murphy is in the form of his life at the minute and the newly crowned China Championship winner is the headline act in the second session of the day. He goes up against Rod Lawler on one of the streamed tables while on the other one the current Indian Open champion Matthew Selt is up against the Chinese player Si Jiahui. Three other matches take place in this session as well with Alan McManus facing Peter Lines, Michael White meeting the Northern Ireland World Cup player Jordan Brown and Ricky Walden playing Lee Walker.

Evening Session

Mark Selby is the main attraction in the evening session. His route through to the final stages in China will have to go through Jamie Clarke in a match which will be on one of the streamed tables, while on the other Jack Lisowski will go up against the tricky Chinese player Tian Pengfei. Two other matches make up the final session of the day where Daniel Wells takes on Nigel Bond and Noppon Saengkham goes up against Simon Lichtenberg.

Betting

Michael White has only won one match this season and that was against a Jackson Page who he probably felt comfortable playing given that they are from the same country and no doubt would have known each other well, so I’m a little surprised he is the favourite to see off Jordan Brown on Thursday.

Brown is still making his way in the game but he has clearly taken inspiration from his countryman Mark Allen and although he is establishing himself on the tour, he does already have a win over Stuart Bingham this season, and he has taken three frames off of Judd Trump as well. Brown might not make it into something special but White’s issues have been well-documented. I don’t see how he’s the favourite based on results this season so I’ll take Brown at 11/10.
