2020-21 Premier League – Southampton vs Liverpool Tips, TV and Betting Preview

There is one match left in the Premier League weekend and it comes in the Monday Night Football where Southampton host the champions Liverpool, a side who they have made plenty of money out of in recent seasons!

Liverpool have watched on as Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham and Man City have all closed in on them and here is their chance to respond. Southampton are enjoying a decent season but have just tailed off in recent matches so they’ll be eyeing up a win here too.

Where to watch

The match will form the football part of the Monday Night Football programme which can be watched on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League. The programme begins at 7pm with the match itself kicking off at 8pm.

Southampton

It was a very good start to the season for Southampton and while they haven’t been terrible in recent weeks, it is worth pointing out that their only two wins in the last eight matches were against Brighton and Sheffield United, which aren’t exactly the best wins on a form guide right now. The Saints are four without a win going into this match and of more of a concern is the fact that they have only scored one goal in that time.

Injuries are starting to hit the Saints a little but they are not exactly getting wiped out or anything like that. They would probably have liked their fans to still be allowed into the stadium here as there is something of a rivalry with Liverpool given the amount of players who have left Hampshire for Merseyside in recent times. This is a bit of a free hit for Southampton but if they can win the match they move back inside the top six.

Liverpool

This hasn’t been the convincing season that Liverpool would have been hoping for when it comes to defending their Premier League crown, but despite that they are still top of the pile and can’t really be criticised too much. You can have concerns with them though and one of them is that they look a little jaded and the other is that they haven’t really offered up their best form on the road, that emphatic win at Crystal Palace recently aside.

Liverpool looked a bit ordinary at Newcastle on Wednesday evening but where they were indifferent was in attacking areas which was a surprise. We know they are not going to be as good as they might be defensively with all the injuries that they have in that department and it will be interesting to see how they go here because unlike in recent away matches, they take on a team who are prepared to carry an offensive threat to any team.

Team News

Southampton will be without their goalkeeper Alex McCarthy for this match so Fraser Forster will come in for his first start for the Saints in a while. They are also without Jannik Vestergaard and Nathan Redmond who are both injured.

Liverpool have a whole host of defensive injuries with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all missing. Diogo Jota and Naby Keita are two other players on the injured list so the likes of Curtis Jones and Rhys Williams could start.

Betting

Given that both these teams are missing key defensive personnel I think the natural bet here is to side with the goals. We know if this Liverpool front line catch fire that they could cover the over 3 line on their own quite comfortably but the way Southampton are playing right now you’ve got to think they will create some opportunities to contribute to the scoring themselves. I’ve seen little to suggest that Southampton would shut up shop and look to contain Liverpool so that bodes well.

The likes of Danny Ings will be out with a point to prove in this match but with Vestergaard and McCarthy missing at the other end there is a chance that Liverpool will feast on Southampton here. The last time anyone other than McCarthy was in the Southampton goal was that ill-fated match against Leicester City last season. There looks to be a high potential for goals here in my eyes so at a shade over evens I’m happy to get on the over 3 line.
