Having looked at who will finish where at the top end of the Premier League table, it is now time to take a peek at another of the popular markets ahead of the new campaign and that is the top goalscorer offering.
Some of the biggest and best attackers in the world are on show in the division this term so this should be a keenly fought Golden Boot challenge throughout the campaign, one which could have a number of twists and turns.

The Favourites
Mo Salah and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have been there or thereabouts over the last couple of seasons. Salah won the Golden Boot in 2018 and shared it in 2019 but didn’t have as good a 2020 and Liverpool actually look better through Sadio Mane than they do the Egyptian so I wouldn’t want to be on him. It is hard to go against Aubameyang with his goalscoring record and he so nearly pipped Jamie Vardy to the crown last season. At 11/2 though I prefer to look elsewhere in a market where one injury and you’re done for.
Harry Kane is the 6/1 third favourite to win the Golden Boot for a third time. The England and Tottenham captain hasn’t actually won this since 2017 and a lot of the reason for that is that he keeps picking up injuries and that has to be a concern for anyone backing him at what is a pretty restricted price when you weigh it all up. The one thing he has going for him is he is very much Tottenham’s main man – but for how much longer?
New Chelsea recruit Timo Werner is a 9/1 shot alongside Sergio Aguero. The latter isn’t getting any younger and could miss out on matches from time to time when Gabriel Jesus is preferred so that isn’t ideal by any means. Werner comes with a big reputation but he’ll need to hit the ground running immediately and we don’t always see that happening from big money foreign imports. He just feels a little on the short side to me I have to say. It is 14/1 bar.

Profile
If you look at the list of top scorers above, we don’t need to be on someone who is going to play for a champion side which offers up a lot more options from a betting point of view. That said it stands to reason that the teams higher up the table are going to score more goals so in theory players for those clubs are going to be more likely to top score.
I think the thing to concentrate on is the need to be the main man. If we can be on a penalty taker as well then that is all the more sweet as he’ll get a few cheap goals in that manner. When you narrow it down using those trends the market is a little easier to manage.
Betting
At the prices on offer I’ll go with a couple of bets in this market this season. The first of those is Raul Jimenez, who has scored 30 goals in his last two seasons at Wolves. The first of those was when Wolves were establishing themselves in the Premier League and the second one was last term when they started the season so much earlier than the rest so needed managing. There are no excuses on either front this season and with the Mexican and Adama Traore looking to have built up a nice understanding I expect Jimenez to continue to improve his goal tally. He’s one of the best centre-forwards in the Premier League, if not the best, and 33/1 is a big price on him to top score especially with him being on penalties.
Another player who is on penalties for his side is Chris Wood and he looks a massive price at 100/1. Injury restricted him to 32 appearances last season but he still found the net 14 times for a Burnley side that for the first half of it were really struggling. They might struggle again but at least if they do we know Wood can still find the net. The big Kiwi scored in his last three games of last term so he’ll be going into this season in good form. Slowly but surely Sean Dyche is putting more and more creativity in this Burnley side, especially from wide positions, and if they stay fit the supply line to Wood should be strong. I’ll pay to see how he goes in a season where a lot of the bigger names might get games off because of the crazy schedule, a luxury Burnley might not be able to afford with Wood.
