2020-21 Sky Bet Championship – Saturday 26th September Matches Tips and Betting Preview

The Championship season continues on Saturday afternoon as nine matches are played out up and down the country. Those who got off to a good start will be looking to build on that here while those not quite so fortunate will be looking to get their season up and running.

As always on a Saturday there is a match in front of the TV cameras and then the other matches are all behind the iFollow system that the clubs have so they are able to be streamed so we don’t need to miss any of the action.

Saturday’s fixtures are as follows: (3pm unless stated. TV in brackets)

Watford v Luton Town (12.30)

Wycombe Wanderers v Swansea City (12.30 – Sky Main Event & Sky Football)

Barnsley v Coventry City

Birmingham City v Rotherham United

Cardiff City v Reading

Derby County v Blackburn Rovers

Millwall v Brentford

Preston North End v Stoke City

Queens Park Rangers v Middlesbrough

Big Matches

The televised offering is a bit of a nothing game in truth as Wycombe Wanderers play host to Swansea City. Wycombe haven’t picked up a point as a Championship club yet while Swansea look to have picked up where they left off last season with a win and a draw from their opening two matches. The other big match on Saturday is also an early kick off when Watford host Luton Town in the first Beds-Herts derby to be played in some 14 years.

Best of the Rest

Elsewhere the early pacesetters Reading made the journey down the M4 to face Cardiff City while Birmingham in sixth welcome Rotherham United to St Andrews. There is an entertaining looking match between Derby County and Blackburn Rovers at Pride Park while Millwall host Brentford in the latest London derby in the second tier. Neil Warnock returns to one of his many clubs when he takes his Middlesbrough side to the capital to face QPR while the other matches sees Barnsley hosting Coventry City and Preston welcoming Stoke City to Deepdale.

Betting

I like two bets on Saturday. The first of them is for Birmingham City to beat Rotherham United. I will take a bit of draw cover here as we are still early in the season but the Blues have made a bright start under Aitor Karanka and his record in this division suggests that is no fluke and it will continue. Rotherham are the archetypical yoyo club and their only three points so far have come against Wycombe Wanderers which is probably going to be par for the course for most teams. I think Birmingham are the better side here and I’d be surprised if they don’t show that over the course of the afternoon.

Blackburn Rovers have made a good start to the season having pushed Bournemouth close on the opening day before wiping Wycombe Wanderers out last week and I expect them to build on that start when they take on Derby County at Pride Park. I saw Derby last week and they are clearly struggling with injuries and a serious lack of confidence. They didn’t finish last season all that well and that looks to have carried over to this one. Blackburn look excellent in front of goal which is one thing Derby don’t so on the draw no bet line I’ve got to side with the team who I think are more than dark horses for promotion this season.
