It is quarter final night at the European Championship on Saturday evening with the eight remaining men knowing they are getting ever closer to winning what has become a pretty big tournament in the scheme of things given the cancellation of so much this year.
Just one member of the top 10 in the world rankings are left in after a week of shocks and surprises so far and it will be interesting to see if the tournament is a cruise for Peter Wright from here on in or whether the shocks continue.
William O’Connor vs James Wade
The opening quarter final of the night sees the man who only made it into the field through the back door in William O’Connor taking on one of the two men left in the tournament who has won a TV title in the past in James Wade.
Wade is a former winner of this tournament and he will know he is the only man remaining in the top half of the draw who has won a TV tournament and that experience is likely to put him in good stead here. To be fair to William O’Connor he has taken full advantage of his late entry into the tournament and played very well in both of his matches. We’ve seen in previous tournaments to beware the man playing with the house money so he might well put in a good performance here. I still find it hard to believe Wade will lose this match but he’s a pretty cramped favourite so I’ll leave this one alone.
Jonny Clayton vs Dirk van Duijvenbode
The second of the quarter finals sees the Welsh star Jonny Clayton taking on the man who is in the form of his life in Dirk van Duijvenbode who is backing up his run in the World Grand Prix with another solid effort here so far.
I look at this match and I expect consistency to win the day and that comes through the form of Jonny Clayton who is remarkably consistent both in his scoring and the results he gets in tournaments these days. Dirk is likely to have patches of excellence but then he’ll have flat spots and he needs to minimise those flat spots as much as possible. It didn’t cost him against Michael Smith because Smith couldn’t hit the doubles to put him away but Clayton will. I’m on Clayton outright so I’m happy to let that continue to ride here.

Peter Wright vs Steve West
The third match of the evening sees the only remaining member of the top 10 left in the event in Peter Wright taking on another of the surprise packages of the tournament in Steve West for a place in the semi-finals on Sunday evening.
Wright has overcome the challenges of Gabriel Clemens and Gerwyn Price in this tournament so far and he has looked good in doing so but he believes there is more to come from him, and if he finds that here he should have way too much for West. To be fair to West though he has scored exceptionally well so far this week and has beaten a couple of classy operators himself in Krzysztof Ratajski and Mensur Suljovic so he’ll feel good about his chances. You’d expect Wright to win this but whether he covers a handicap remains to be seen. I’m happy enough to leave this one alone too.
Devon Petersen vs Ian White
The last of the quarter finals was meant to contain Michael van Gerwen but Ian White didn’t read that script when he dumped the Dutchman out on Friday night and instead it is he who will line up against Devon Petersen for a place in the semi-final.
Both these men will see the opportunity that is in front of them here and while both have won European Tour events they haven’t yet even made a televised final so this will be a big match for both players. That should add to the competitiveness of it although it wasn’t likely to be short of that anyway given the quality of the two performers. Given what is at stake picking the winner doesn’t look the easiest task but the best bet in the match, and indeed the evening, comes in the 180s.
The 180s line is 10.5 for this match which you would feel is a little on the high side given that there is a maximum of 19 legs in the match but both men are pretty heavy scorers so I don’t see that being a problem. They both hit seven 180s in their last match and all we need is for them both to hit five here with one on top so the total is well within range. I’m expecting the scoring to be good here so I like the over.
