The last 16 of the French Open comes to a close on Tuesday after the weather halted the schedule a little on Monday. The first half of the quarter finals are also being played as the tournament moves to the main court at Roland Garros for the remainder of both singles draws.
We’ve had to wait a while for some marquee or heavyweight matches in the men’s draw but they come along from here on in while the wide open women’s draw will no doubt continue to offer up plenty of surprises.
Day 9 Recap
Three of the four men’s matches were won in straight sets on another routine day out in Paris on Monday with Pablo Carreno Busta, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Novak Djokovic all breezing through. Andrey Rublev also progressed but he dropped a set along the way. It was similar in the three women’s matches that were played out. Petra Kvitova and Laura Siegemund won in straight sets and although Sofia Kenin won she needed a deciding set to overcome the challenge of Fiona Ferro.
It was another win and loss day for us out at Roland Garros. It started badly to be fair when Petra Kvitova was far too good for Shuai Zhang but we got most of those losses back pretty quickly because Marton Fucsovics won the opening set against Andrey Rublev to bring the bet on him to win a set in as early as possible. Hopefully we can finish the week strong from here on in.
Philippe Chatrier Court
The remainder of the tournament will be played on this court and we have a bonus match on Tuesday as the game held over from Monday because of the rain opens the show when Dani Collins meets Ons Jabeur in the last of the last 16 matches. When they are done we have the first of the quarter finals on Tuesday when the highest remaining seed in the women’s draw, Elina Svitolina, looks to make it through to another Grand Slam semi-final when she takes on Nadia Podoroska who is living the dream here.
The men then take centre stage after they are finished as the big match on Tuesday takes place when Dominic Thiem meets Diego Schwartzman in a match which has all the hallmarks of being an absolute cracker. We go back to the women’s draw when that is done as Iga Swiatek takes on Martina Trevisan in a simply huge match for both women before the defending champion Rafael Nadal faces his toughest test of the tournament so far when he takes on the quality young Italian player Jannik Sinner.

Betting
I’ll take a couple of outsiders to run their higher ranked opponents close on Tuesday with the first of those being Martina Trevisan who while I wouldn’t say has nothing to lose in this match, is certainly playing with a lot less expectation on her shoulders than Iga Swiatek. Swiatek delivered the goods and some in demolishing Simona Halep in the previous round and as a result she is now the favourite to win the tournament which is quite something when you consider the Polish ace wasn’t even in the top 50 in the world heading into the tournament. We often see after the highs of an emotional win the size of which Swiatek had in the previous round that there is something of a comedown and if there is that here then Trevisan, who has beaten higher ranked opponents than she faces here in the form of Coco Gauff, Maria Sakkari and Kiki Bertens, can stay within 5.5 games. Based on those wins she may well do that regardless of the levels of Swiatek.
Rafael Nadal hasn’t faced anyone of note in the tournament with all of his opponents thus far being ranked outside the top 70. In terms of rankings that doesn’t change on Tuesday but I think we all know that Jannik Sinner will be well inside the top 50 before too long and potentially a lot higher than that so the Spaniard should get his first test here. I don’t expect Sinner to beat Nadal. That would be asking a lot at this stage, but there is no reason why he can’t remain within 9.5 games of him. Sinner showed in beating Alexander Zverev that he can play the long game and have enough left to get over the line and let’s not forget he took David Goffin to the cleaners in the first round. He only needs to be competitive for a couple of sets and he’ll stay within 9.5 games and I think he has the tools for that.
