2020 Modus A Night at the Darts – Friday 17th April Group 5 Tips and Betting Preview

It is the penultimate night of the first week of the Modus A Night at the Darts competition on Friday evening, where once again five players will battle it out in their homes for our amusement and entertainment, each looking to win the group on the night.

The standard was incredibly good on Thursday night and the men involved all look to be hitting their straps nicely, which should make for some more compelling action to keep us going on another Friday night in lockdown.

The Format

Each night from Monday to Saturday five men will battle it out in a round robin group with the overall champion being determined on Saturday May 2. Matches will see the players compete over the best of 9 legs with each of them at home in front of a webcam throwing at their own individual dartboards. Scores can be found on Dart Connect and the tournament will be streamed on the bookmaker live streaming consoles and for free on Dartslive.tv.

Thursday Recap

We had one of the tightest groups yet on Thursday as Wessel Nijman once again came out on top, but he only saw off Martin Adams courtesy of beating the Lakeside legend in their match, after they finished level on points and with the same leg difference. Ritchie Edhouse and Scott Mitchell both picked up two wins on a night where 180s and 95+ averages were the norm.

Unfortunately for us betting wise we backed completely the wrong horse over the course of the night as Raymond van Barneveld didn’t really show up until it was far too late, and even then he showed nothing of the darts which saw him go so close to winning the group on Tuesday. He, and we, will want much better on Friday night.

Friday Line Up

We will have a different winner on Friday that is for sure because it is the turn of Thursday’s winner, Wessel Nijman, to have a night off, with the man who he has been building a rivalry with over the last fortnight, David Evans, coming back in for him. He joins the three world champions Martin Adams, Scott Mitchell and Raymond van Barneveld while Ritchie Edhouse will also be around and he’ll be looking to continue his progression into Friday’s play.

Outright Betting

This is a group where I’m itching to take someone but we haven’t really seen enough consistency to trust anyone. All five men have had a night where they have played very well but they’ve all had an evening of throwing a bag of nails as well. My gut feeling is that Martin Adams is improving as the week goes on and you only have to listen to the way he calls his scores out to know that he is enjoying himself, which is half the battle.

David Evans is a worthy favourite but he was ordinary for once on Wednesday night and had Thursday night off so he might take some time to get back up to speed. You can make a case for all of the other four looking value but ultimately you are placing trust in their consistency which isn’t a great place to be in. I’m tempted to back Wolfie but I’ll save my money for the match betting instead.

Match Betting

That is where I will get with Martin Adams as I feel the 5/4 on the three time world champion to beat Ritchie Edhouse is just a shade too big. I understand why Edhouse is favourite after showing improvement on Thursday night but Adams also had his best night during that session too, leading me to thinking that there might yet be even more to come from the veteran who may well have needed the first couple of nights to get going after a period of downtime.

Wolfie was brilliant in his win over Scott Mitchell and played well again to beat Edhouse and should take a lot of confidence from that. His win over Edhouse on Thursday night was his third in succession over that opponent so the odds against on him recording a fourth successive win looks perfectly fair value. We might not have been all there is from Adams yet and if there is more to come he has it in him to win this.
