2020 Modus A Night at the Darts – Tuesday 21st April Group 2 Tips and Betting Preview

It is the second night of week two of the A Night at the Darts competition on Tuesday and once again we will see five stars of the game battling it out from their own homes to keep us entertained while we continue to be in lockdown.

The standard of this competition on Monday went up to a serious level with 90+ averages and 100+ averages the norm and 180s coming for fun throughout the evening. It made it a great watch and hopefully we get more of the same on Tuesday.

The Format

Each night from Monday to Saturday five men will battle it out in a round robin group with the overall champion being determined on Saturday May 2. Matches will see the players compete over the best of 9 legs with each of them at home in front of a webcam throwing at their own individual dartboards. Scores can be found on Dart Connect and the tournament will be streamed on the bookmaker live streaming consoles and for free on Dartslive.tv.

Monday Recap

We saw the biggest shock of all of these home leagues so far on Monday night when the outsider of the five, Boris Koltsov, saw off the rest of the field to come through and top the table with three wins. It was completely deserved too as he scored brilliantly all night and nailed doubles at the right time. Wessel Nijman, David Evans and Jason Askew could only be separated on the number of legs they won after two wins each while Martin Adams might only have won one match but he delivered some great darts.

Koltsov’s performance meant that we went dry on the opening night of competition on Monday. I have to say at no stage did I see him hitting a 105.25 average but that was what he delivered against Jason Askew, who himself played well enough in averaging more than 95, but the Russian was too good. That was not only the difference in the match bet but in the group outright bet too sadly.

Tuesday Line Up

Wessel Nijman is the man who has the night off on Tuesday evening which means that the likes of Boris Koltsov, David Evans and Jason Askew have the chance to put a bit of distance between themselves and the man who would have started the week as the favourite to be crowned champion at the close of play on Saturday. Martin Adams will be looking to pick up a few more wins on Tuesday night while Scott Mitchell makes his first appearance of his second week of competitive action.

Outright Betting

This has the feeling of a night where any one of the five could get their hands on overall glory. I don’t think we are going to see anyone win four matches in a night this week unless they are particularly inspired so we could be looking at leg difference being the deciding factor which always makes me nervous about backing Jason Askew because he seems to have a complete mauling a day in this competition.

If Boris Koltsov plays the way he played on Monday night there is an easy case to be made for him being value at 11/2, but we need to see some consistency from him to appreciate him as a genuine contender. David Evans has been there or thereabouts for a while but has come off the top of his form while Martin Adams and Scott Mitchell should be competitive. It all means I’m happy to leave the group betting alone.

Match Betting

I’ll go with a couple of bets over the course of Tuesday night. The first of those comes in the form of Martin Adams who I think is overpriced to see off Scott Mitchell. Adams’ results really didn’t reflect his performances on Monday night and if he just tidies up on his finishing he isn’t going to be far away. Mitchell is entitled to take a few games to find his rhythm and length again after three days off and it might be that we don’t see the best of him until Wednesday and beyond. Adams averaged 96.8, 90.5 and 91.3 in his first three matches on Monday. If he’s in that ballpark here he is no 7/4 shot. I’ll play the value there.

I’ll also take the 180s in the match between Boris Koltsov and Jason Askew where the line looks attackable at 3.5. Askew ploughed in the 180s for fun last week hitting 62 of them in his 20 matches and he registered another seven on Monday night. Koltsov hit nine of them on his first evening of show and a whole load of 140s. Both these men are fluent throwers and they meet in the third match of the night for the Russian and the last game for Askew so they should be nicely acclimatised to the throw. The over looks on here.
