2020 Modus Icons of Darts – Thursday 14th May Group 4 Tips and Betting Preview

We have reached the fourth day of another week of action in the Modus Icons of Darts event and on Thursday the second pool of players play their middle match of the three they compete in to keep us entertained during this lockdown.

Home darts has become a regular thing over the last month or so and seven players will once again toe their own oches to battle it out for the second daily title of the week, and the confidence that might bring when professional darts resumes.

The Format

Each day from Monday to Saturday seven players will battle it out for a daily title. There are two pools of players, one which plays on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the other which toe the oche on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Each day the seven players will play each other once over the best of seven legs with two points for a win. The daily winner is the player with the most points. If players are level on points it is determined on leg difference and then the record between the two. The entire event can be watched on various bookmaker websites, dartshop.tv or the Modus YouTube channel.

Wednesday Recap

For the second time this week Justin Smith ran out winner of the group after recording five wins from his six matches. Indeed, for the second time in succession he was only one leg away from a perfect six wins so he is holding himself together well. There was a right old logjam for second with five players all finishing on three wins on the day. Fallon Sherrock had the best leg difference so she came second ahead of James Hubbard who had his best day so far. Martin Adams finished fourth with Diogo Portela and Boris Koltsov the other two men on six points. Adam Huckvale found just one win on a day he came in at short notice.

It was a dead level day for us on the betting front in a week which is becoming quite frustrating now. We couldn’t lose on the day from relatively early on after Boris Koltsov absolutely thrashed Martin Adams. Unfortunately he couldn’t follow that up in the final match of the day when he ran into a bit of a monstrous performance from Diogo Portela.

Thursday Line Up

The man who delivered a clean sweep on the opening day of action for this pool of players is back for more on Thursday as David Evans goes in search of another group title. He will once again be up against the young pair of Arron Monk and Wessel Nijman, who will be looking for much improved showings on what they delivered over the course of play on Tuesday, when they managed to win just five matches between them.

Scott Mitchell finished as the runner up in this pool on Tuesday and he will be looking to go one better than that over the course of the day while Darryl Fitton will be hoping to build on his debut showing which saw him come third. There is another day at the oche for Paul Nicholson and then the other player on show is Keelan Kay, who was meant to feature on Wednesday but who seems to have been saved for Thursday.

Outright Betting

If David Evans doesn’t continue his wonderful form of Tuesday, there is plenty of good value to be had in this group as it is 3/1 the field outside of him. Even were Evans to win he’s too short at 7/4 in this company, although he is on the early shift so he has the chance to move clear before most of his challengers get up and running. If Evans was to slip up for any reason that would open the door to everyone and I’m going to take a punt on that being the case.

Wessel Nijman and Arron Monk are the two most likely to overcome him but they both play late in the day so they could be out of contention early doors if they get off to slow starts. The one I’m prepared to take a chance on at a monster price considering he was second on Tuesday is Scott Mitchell. He scored much better than usual on Tuesday and if he can tidy up the finishing in key moments then I think he could take advantage were Evans to slip up early in the day.

Match Betting

I’ll take a couple of bets which both come relatively early in the day as I’ve learnt my lesson about betting late on. The first of them is the bet which won for me on Tuesday which is for David Evans to cover a handicap against Paul Nicholson. As I mentioned on Tuesday, Evans won all three meetings between these two by 4-1, 4-2 and 4-3 scores, the latter being when Nicholson threw a barrage of 180s at the Manchester man. On Tuesday it was back to 4-1 for Evans and I still think he’ll have a bit in hand of ‘The Asset’. He’s just the better player and as long as he does nothing daft Evans should pick up the points in fine style here.

Slightly later I like Scott Mitchell to beat Darryl Fitton once again. I’ve already championed Mitchell’s prowess above but he appears to be particularly good against Fitton. On the pro scene he has won their last five matches and then he has a 4-0 win over him from Tuesday with a 97 average. To be fair to Fitton he played pretty well in the main on debut on Tuesday but I’m still not convinced that he has the consistency needed. Mitchell often builds his form throughout the week and if that trend continues then he should be able to see off the Dazzler at a tidy 4/5 price.
