2020 Modus Icons of Darts – Tuesday 16th June Group 2 Tips and Betting Preview

The second pool of players make themselves known to us for the first time in the Modus Icons of Darts competition on Tuesday as they take to their streams for competitive practice and to give us further sporting entertainment.

We expected a strong competition among the first pool of players on Monday and got exactly that and pool two looks very tight so we probably should expect much of the same as the week continues at a decent lick.

The Format

Each day from Monday to Saturday six players will battle it out for a daily title. There are two pools of players, one which plays on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the other which toe the oche on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Each day the six players will play each other once over the best of nine legs with two points for a win. The daily winner is the player with the most points. If players are level on points it is determined on leg difference and then the record between the two. The entire event can be watched on various bookmaker websites, dartshop.tv or the Modus YouTube channel.

Monday Recap

Martin Adams is absolutely dominating the Modus live leagues at the minute and he won his group for the fourth successive time when he won all five matches in a brilliant display of darts. Jarred Cole took full advantage of his only showing on the week to win four of his five matches and finish second, while there was a much improved display from Boris Koltsov to come third. Fallon Sherrock returned with a couple of wins while the debut of Dave Parletti saw him win one match. Scott Marsh surprisingly went winless on the day.

The week did not start how we wanted it to from a betting standpoint as neither of our two bets won. Scott Marsh lost in a deciding leg to Fallon Sherrock to get the day off to a poor start and then Dave Parletti ran into seven Boris Koltsov 180s in seven legs to be beaten by the Russian so that leaves us with a lot of work to do to try and come out of a result poor turn of results.

Tuesday Line Up

We have a mixed bag of experience and debutants on Tuesday. In terms of achievements in the game it is Scott Mitchell who heads the way in this pool of players. Mitchell was second in his group on Saturday and will be looking to go one better here. Mark Webster was behind him in that section but reopposes him here. It is only four groups ago that he came out on top so he merits respecting in what looks like a very tight section.

We have a pair of players making their debut in the Modus Icons of Darts. Steve Brown is well known from the PDC circuit and we get to see his son John Brown for the first time on Tuesday. Former PDC tour card holder Stephen Burton is the other player making his debut here. Paul Nicholson is a regular on our streams and he swaps the microphone for the darts on Tuesday. Andy Jenkins is also back in action after a week off.

Outright Betting

I’m not massively enamoured by the 3/1 on Andy Jenkins to win this group but I do think that it is worth a go in what looks quite an open group but one which lacks a standout challenger that you can’t pick holes through. Nobody in this group looks set to dominate the rest in the scoring phase of the legs so this pool could well come down to who is the best on the doubles over the course of the day and Jenkins is usually pretty solid in that regard.

Scott Mitchell is obviously the biggest danger but he is every very strong or quite ordinary. Mark Webster is another who should be respected I guess but I can’t get that horror show against Keelan Kay on Saturday out of my head. We’ve seen throughout the Icons of Darts that debutants often need a day or two to get up to speed with everything which leaves Jenkins and Nicholson. I wouldn’t write Nicholson off but the 3/1 on Jenks will do for me.

Match Betting

I’ll go with a couple of match bets as well on Tuesday and they both involve taking on Mark Webster. If he doesn’t finish well I don’t see how he can win many matches here because he isn’t going to outscore many. The first man I’ll take him on with is Stephen Burton who looks a massive price at 17/10. It is only three months ago Burton made it through a couple of rounds of the UK Open. He almost won his tour card back at Q-School where he was banging in 90+ averages for fun and at the end of 2018 he made the last 16 of the Players Championship finals and played in the World Championship at Ally Pally. Last year he won on the Challenge Tour so there is a case to be made that he’s the best player on show here. This is his final match of the day so he’ll have had a chance to settle into the event and I think he can see off Webster. Occasionally you get a 90 average out of Webster but his finishing has started becoming a concern. Burton can take advantage.

The other man I will take to beat him is Paul Nicholson. I can’t be having ‘The Asset’ at odds against in this match. That is far too big. This is no worse than a 50:50 match but if you factor in the head to head over the Icons of Darts there is a simple case to be made that Nicholson should be the favourite. Admittedly they’ve not met for a month or so and Webster has improved since then but Nicholson won the last group he played in so it isn’t like he’s a mug by any stretch of the imagination. This might come down to who handles the pressure moments the best and that just feels like it is going to be Nicholson. He shouldn’t be odds against but I’ll happily take those odds.
