2020 Modus Icons of Darts – Wednesday 3rd June Group 3 Tips and Betting Preview

The first week of the third phase of the Icons of Darts competition sees the six players in the opening pool of action brought to us by the team at Modus Darts battling out for their second day of three, on what should be a decent day of darts on Wednesday.

This extended format is bringing out more relaxation in the players and with that is coming a much better standard, with luck and the advantage of throw not having quite the impact on the overall proceedings that it was previously.

The Format

Each day from Monday to Saturday six players will battle it out for a daily title. There are two pools of players, one which plays on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the other which toe the oche on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Each day the six players will play each other once over the best of nine legs with two points for a win. The daily winner is the player with the most points. If players are level on points it is determined on leg difference and then the record between the two. The entire event can be watched on various bookmaker websites, dartshop.tv or the Modus YouTube channel.

Tuesday Recap

Tuesday was a very good day of darts and for the second day in a row it came down to the final match of the day, which is testament to the improvement in the format. Jason Askew had all but won the group by then needing only two legs in the last match against Mark Webster to come out on top. He won all five to win that match and top the pile with four wins. There were three wins for Scott Mitchell and a brace of victories for the other four men – Mark Webster, Boris Koltsov, Keelan Kay and Andy Jenkins, on what was a competitive day of darts.

It was an up and down betting day for us in Tuesday’s group. We came out with a profit which is all that mattered as Jason Askew justified our faith in him to top the pile at 5/2. Unfortunately we was one 180 short in the bet we took between Boris Koltsov and Keelan Kay, a game Koltsov won 5-1 which I didn’t see coming so for once there was no bad luck involved in that one. Two profitable days so far though and we’ll be hoping for more of that on Wednesday.

Wednesday Line Up

The first pool of players are back on show on Wednesday which means that we get the likes of Monday winner Scott Marsh returning to his home oche. He’ll be looking to defend the group title but he’ll need to play well once again if he is to top the group again. Marsh beat Martin Adams on leg difference on Monday and the veteran former world champion is back for more on Wednesday. It is David Evans who is the favourite to top the table but he is just beginning to be expensive to follow.

The other three players on show are all outsiders on Wednesday. Paul Nicholson is rated to have the best chance with the bookmakers but I’m not sure about that. Fallon Sherrock showed signs of life on Monday but it might just be that the format has gone against her a little now. James Hubbard makes up the sextet in action on Monday and it goes without saying that he is going to need to find a massive improvement after going winless to start the week.

Outright Betting

I was very close to taking Scott Marsh to win this section on Monday but bottled it at the last minute. While that was annoying the bet I replaced it with won so it wasn’t all doom and gloom but I’m not going to pass up the chance again, especially as we can still get him at 9/1 to win the group. I thought the format getting extended would suit Marsh down to the ground and that was how it played out on Monday. Nothing has changed in that regard for me.

I don’t see this being a group where someone wins all five matches. It just feels too competitive for that but I see it as a four player group because I can’t be having James Hubbard and I’m not sure this format suits Fallon Sherrock as well. You have to respect David Evans but he’s only won one of his last four groups. Martin Adams is also to be respected but at more than four times the price I’ll take Marsh in the hope that this format really does suit him.

Match Betting

It is Scott Marsh who I like in the match betting as well on Wednesday. It is his match with Fallon Sherrock which interests me the most. I’m actually a little surprised that bookmakers are struggling to split these two based on what we saw on Monday when Marsh won 5-2 and just played a whole lot better than Sherrock over the course of the day. I keep saying it but I really do think that the extension in the format is a good thing for Marsh.

Sherrock is more than capable of delivering the goods over the best of nine legs but I don’t think she is as good over it because obviously over seven legs her finishing prowess comes to the fore whereas over nine there are more chances for the other players to get the better of her. Sherrock only had one average over 86 on Monday. She’ll need to find another to win this I suspect. Marsh averaged in the 90s in three of his five matches to start the week and that’s enough to make me think the Monday champion can open his Wednesday account with a win in this one.
