The Modus Icons of Darts event has been keeping us entertained this week but it is not the only darts we can enjoy on Wednesday, as on Wednesday evening four stars of the game battle it out in the second of the ‘PDC Darts at Home’ events.
The first event of this kind last week saw Devon Peterson come out on top against Chris Dobey, Ted Evetts, Matt Edgar and Luke Humphries but the star quality ramps up a notch this week, as three world champions and one of the stars of the current game come out to play.
The Format
Four players compete in a round robin league phase event with the player who wins the most matches being crowned the winner of the tournament. If players are tied on wins then leg difference will come in to decide the winner. Each match is the best of 9 legs and will see the two competitors playing on their own board which they will live stream. The event can be seen on the PDC Facebook or YouTube channels.
The Line Up
In a field that has three world champions in it, it says a lot about Nathan Aspinall that he is the big star on show on the night. The world number six should be getting ready for another night of the Premier League but instead he is resorted to entertaining us from his own practice board. Nevertheless, the former UK Open champion sets a pretty decent standard and would appear to be a very worthy even money favourite.
Stephen Bunting is the next highest ranked player in the field. He is quality on his day but he hasn’t had many of his days in recent times. Even so, this is a chance to keep his eye in and show why he sits only a few quid outside the top 16 in the PDC rankings. Bunting rarely lacks for confidence so he’ll fancy his chances of doing some damage at around the 7/2 mark, despite needing to offer more than he has shown us recently.
Steve Beaton is the next ranked player in the competition and if that silky throw of his is in good order he could yet upset this trio of opponents. You never truly know what you are going to get from Beaton but he has never been one to let pressure worry him so you would think the lack of atmosphere isn’t going to be an issue. If there is a spoiler in the pack I wouldn’t be surprised if it is the Adonis but I sense this sort of setup is a young man’s game.
The final competitor this week is the former Lakeside champion Jelle Klaasen, a man who has dropped to number 48 in the world rankings but we all know he is a whole lot better than that. We’ve seen one Dutch ace pound the board in the Modus event this week and if talent counts for anything in this sort of gig then Klaasen should definitely not be ruled out. I fancy the Cobra will be competitive here at 9/2.

Outright Betting
You can make a case for all four men if you wanted to in this tournament but I’m keeping youth on my side here. We saw in the PDC event last week that form was counting for a lot and Nathan Aspinall is head and shoulders above the other three in that department here. We’ve also seen that by and large this is a setup for the youngsters and Aspinall is the youngest of this lot. He takes darts very seriously, as he should do, so I don’t see this being a jolly up for him.
Klaasen could be a danger and it could be that the winner of that match wins the tournament but while I respect Bunting and Beaton in these environments, I’ve got to go with the man who is making a huge name for himself at the minute and that is definitely Aspinall. He’s a class above the other three and even at even money I’ll back him to show that.
Match Betting
I’ll put my money where my mouth is on my hunch that Jelle Klaasen will put up a good showing here and take him to beat a Stephen Bunting who has rarely ever in his career convinced me over the shorter distances. Get him over the long haul and he can do some damage but he is a rhythm player and he won’t get a lot of that in a match where by the time he’s thrown he’ll be throwing again.
Klaasen is capable of some inspired darts and his own living room is as good a place as any for that to come out. We’ve seen that be the case in the Modus event with Wessel Nijman and just on talent alone I think Klaasen is a real runner here. Bunting misses too many doubles for my liking and over nine legs he who does that rarely wins. Klaasen was a quarter finalist in the UK Open just a month ago. He’s overpriced at evens to beat Bunting.
