2020 US Open Tennis – Day 8 Tips and Betting Preview

The fourth round of the US Open concludes in New York on Monday on what is Labor Day out in the US making it is a special day where the eyes of the world will be on Flushing Meadows where some excellent tennis should be played.

The tournament is still reeling from the incredible and dramatic defaulting of Novak Djokovic on Sunday, a decision that ensures that we will have a new male Grand Slam champion on Sunday night. The women’s event is picking up speed so we’re all set for a competitive and high quality Monday.

Day 7 Recap

It became one of the most dramatic days in US Open history when Novak Djokovic was defaulted during the first set of his clash with Pablo Carreno Busta. That has opened up the men’s draw alarmingly and Alexander Zverev and Borna Coric were quick to take advantage with straight sets wins to set up a quarter final between themselves. We saw a couple of three set epics in the women’s event with Shelby Rogers edging out Petra Kvitova in a deciding tiebreak while Yulia Putintseva outlasted Petra Martic. Jennifer Brady was a convincing winner over Angelique Kerber.

Our bets on Sunday came in the night session which is currently ongoing at the time that we write this preview so an update on those will come in the Tuesday preview. What we do know is that we lost an outright bet on Sunday when Kvitova couldn’t quite get over the line against Rogers which is annoying as she was a warm favourite for that match.

Arthur Ashe Stadium

Labor Day begins with the biggest name of them all in the women’s game on show when Serena Williams opens up the play. She meets the woman who knocked her out of the Cincinnati event here last week in Maria Sakkari in what should be a very good shootout. Once they are done the exciting Felix Auger-Aliassime steps back onto the Arthur Ashe Stadium court to take on the impressive Dominic Thiem in a match many are suggesting the winner of could be the champion on Sunday evening.

The night session opens up with the men for the second evening in a row on Monday. That sees the beaten finalist of last year and the new favourite to win the tournament this time round in Daniil Medvedev taking on the one remaining American man in the event in Frances Tiafoe. After they have decided a winner we get the second very strong looking women’s match on show when the Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin meets the Cincinnati semi-finalist Elise Mertens.

Louis Armstrong Stadium

For the first time in a while it is actually the men who get play up and running on the Louis Armstrong Stadium as the surprise package of the week so far in Vasek Pospisil takes on the exciting youngster Alex de Minaur. We then move to the women’s event where a couple of unseeded players meet for a spot in the quarter finals when Tsvetana Pironkova meets Alize Cornet in a match which is going to present both with a wonderful opportunity.

Once they are done last year’s semi-finalist in the men’s event looks to move to within one win of getting back there as Matteo Berrettini goes up against Andrey Rublev before the action over on Armstrong concludes with the Cincinnati champion Victoria Azarenka meeting the underrated Czech player Karolina Muchova in what could actually be one of the best matches of the day if both live up to their potential.

Men’s Betting

I was tempted to back Andrey Rublev to beat Matteo Berrettini but he’s my one remaining outright bet which has obviously grown in size after the demise of Novak Djokovic and so I’m happy to let him ride in the hope that he comes through and gives us a further run for our money. Clearly the pressure is going to rise on everyone from here on in now that someone is going to win the tournament but there is one bet which I’m happy to take.

It might be that the man under the most pressure now is Dominic Thiem and Felix Auger-Aliassime can take advantage of that. FAA has been superb in this tournament so far and looks like a winner in waiting to me. Thiem hasn’t been quite so efficient and if he does feel the weight of expectation his movement might be an ounce slower which could be key. I’m not sure FAA will be under that much pressure yet. I don’t think he expects to win this tournament yet so he can still play with freedom and the power, pace and movement he has can give Thiem a lot of problems. I think the Canadian is overpriced here.

Women’s Betting

There is one bet I like in the women’s draw as well. If I’m honest there are only two matches I’m considering bets in because I’m still on Maria Sakkari to win her quarter and she’ll be a massive favourite to do that if she can beat Serena Williams for a second week in a row and I’m also on Elise Mertens outright and I’m quite happy with how she is playing too. I like Victoria Azarenka in the other quarter final but I’ll back Alize Cornet to see off Tsvetana Pironkova.

The Pironkova story has been a brilliant one but I think it ends here. I was impressed enough with the play that Cornet displayed in her shortened win over Madison Keys but then her interview afterwards was equally impressive. She is clearly both driven and confident at the minute and should be able to handle the game that Pironkova has. Cornet was hitting the ball very well against Keys and took all the pace and power that came her way. She’s been around long enough now to be able to handle the pressure and at even money she looks the bet to me.
