2020 WDF Remote Darts League – Thursday 23rd April Matches Tips and Betting Preview

The Remote Darts League has kept us entertaining in the twilight hours and beyond for the entirety of the week so far and that continues on Thursday when we head into the second half of the competition.

It is another big night for the 10 men involved, many of whom are battling out for the top four places ahead of finals night, but even for those who are out of contention just getting some form and consistency will mean plenty to them so another decent night of darts is in store.

The Format

If you are a fan of the Premier League Darts event that the PDC hold each year this format will be familiar to you as it is very similar to that. The 10 men face each other once over the first nine evenings of the competition with the top four in the league table progressing to finals night in the 10th evening. The winner of the semi-finals and final is crowned the champion. Each match in the league phase is the best of 12 legs and players get two points for a win and one for a draw. The whole event will be shown live on the Remote Darts League channel on YouTube.

Night Five Recap

It was another steady night of darts on Wednesday, with two standout performances and one really top match in the five. That was the one between Paul Hogan and Jim Williams, which ‘Crocodile Dundee’ won 7-4 with a 94 average. That was bettered in the final game of the night by James Richardson who thrashed Dean Winstanley 7-2 and averaged around the 98 mark in the process. The early darts wasn’t the best but there were wins for Gary Robson over Darryl Fitton, Alan Norris against Wes Newton and Tony O’Shea against John Walton.

It was yet another successful night for us betting wise on Wednesday as James Richardson did what we expected and powered clear of Dean Winstanley, who creditably put in his best showing of the week so far. That topped up the profit nicely going into the second half of what has been a great event to watch and bet on so far.

Fixtures

Alan Norris vs Paul Hogan

Tony O’Shea vs Gary Robson

Darryl Fitton vs Dean Winstanley

James Richardson vs Wes Newton

Jim Williams vs John Walton

Preview

The race for the top four is really beginning to intensify now and Thursday feels like a pivotal night, not least because fourth and fifth meet in the second half of the night when Tony O’Shea takes on Gary Robson in what looks to be the most important game of the evening. Prior to that, Paul Hogan will look to go top of the pile for an hour or so when he takes on Alan Norris, who could get himself right into the mix if he can find a win of his own.

Darryl Fitton is on the fringes of the top four and he’ll be out to strengthen his claims when he goes up against a Dean Winstanley who is yet to register a point, but for whom form is certainly beginning to come back even if the results aren’t yet showing it. League leader James Richardson takes on Wes Newton before the pre-event favourite Jim Williams goes up against the man who was the outsider of the 10 in John Walton.

Betting

I’ll go with three bets on Thursday night with the first of them being on Gary Robson who I think can take care of Tony O’Shea. Robson wasn’t at his best on Wednesday evening but still came past Darryl Fitton. It was the first time all week that ‘Big Robbo’ hasn’t scored strongly but I expect him to sort that out here. If you look at the league table, Tony O’Shea is actually fourth with seven points but four of his points have come against John Walton and Dean Winstanley, who look the weakest in the field at present, and another two came against Darryl Fitton in a match he should have lost, so there is a feeling that his position is a false one. Robson has taken a couple of towellings from Jim Williams and James Richardson, but he has wins over Darryl Fitton, Alan Norris and Dean Winstanley and can add another to his collection here.

James Richardson has been good to me over the last couple of nights and I’ve seen nothing in those matches to suggest he can’t be good again when he takes on Wes Newton on Thursday. I mentioned on Wednesday that if anything Richardson is getting better by the night and that showed when he put in the performance of the tournament so far. The thing that is standing out as much as anything for me is his finishing. I’d go as far as to say he’s the most reliable finisher in the tournament. He’s scoring brilliantly as well and I expect him to take care of Newton with few issues. TO be fair to Newton he played well against Alan Norris, busting some crazy shots but even then he could only average 85. That doesn’t get the job done so I’ll go with another comfortable Richardson win.

Nobody likes to see whitewashes in sport but we shouldn’t ignore the possibility of one in the final match of the night when Jim Williams takes on John Walton. Williams had an off night against Paul Hogan on Wednesday but he should make up for that here. The Welshman has already picked up a 7-2 win over Tony O’Shea in this tournament and has put in a few 90+ averages. I fear for Walton a bit here. It is going to be a late night for him and he goes into it off the back of two 7-1 hidings in the last two nights, with an average around the 71 mark on Wednesday. There’s a huge gulf between these two players and with Williams throwing first it is only three breaks of throw for a whitewash. Part of me hopes it doesn’t happen as it isn’t nice to see but the case is clear for the potential of it to be significantly better than 10/1.
