Although the Western & Southern Open started on Sunday, there is a feeling that the ATP Cincinnati tournament really gets going on Monday when there is a full day of action in the latest of the Masters 1000 events.
We saw some competitive tennis in Cincinnati on Sunday and you would imagine we will get much more of the same on Monday, hopefully with a lot more intensity and quality on top as plenty of big names come out to play.
Center Court
There are only the two men’s matches on the main court on Monday with the women having three matches. Both of the matches have British interest in them as in the day session Dan Evans will look to make it through to the second round. He will have to overcome the daunting challenge of Diego Schwartzman if it is to achieve that aim. The night session match sees Andy Murray taking to the singles court for the first time since Wimbledon when he goes up against a familiar foe in Richard Gasquet.
Grandstand
The action begins on the Grandstand straight from the start with the first of the three matches seeing the Citi Open champion Jannik Sinner going up against Federico Delbonis before Taylor Fritz looks to make progress in a home tournament when he lines up against the clay court specialist Albert Ramos-Vinolas. The other match on this court comes along in the night session as Mackenzie McDonald takes on Brandon Nakashima.

Court 3
There are three matches on Court 3 on Monday and they begin with what should be an entertaining match to start the day when Fabio Fognini goes up against Nikoloz Basilashvili before Marton Fucsovics goes up against a Felix Auger-Aliassime who will be looking to make up for failing to deliver on home soil last week. After a women’s match the last of the men’s matches sees Kevin Anderson taking on the Olympic silver medallist Karen Khachanov.
Best of the Rest
The only other court where there are men’s matches on show over the course of Monday is Court 4 where there are three more outings taking place. Jan-Lennard Struff meets John Millman to kick things off in this part of the grounds while Lloyd Harris will look to continue his positive form when he meets Yoshihito Nishioka. The third game sees the Australian number one Alex de Minaur taking on Filip Krajinovic to round off the day in Cincinnati.
Betting
There isn’t a whole lot that I like throughout the Monday action with form and fitness a concern over so many who are on show but there is one which is pretty hard to ignore after the emphatic way that Alex de Minaur was beaten in Toronto last week. He was walloped 6-1 6-1 by Nikoloz Basilashvili and looked incredibly out of sorts. A week off has come along since then which might have allowed him to refresh and reset but I still don’t think he is a certainty to see off Filip Krajinovic.
Krajinovic tends to go fairly well on a hard court. He had the run to the final in the Paris Masters a few years ago and was a quarter finalist in this event last year, albeit in New York rather than Cincinnati, although the same surface was used. He should be nicely refreshed after a few clay court outings since Wimbledon and I expect him to go well now he is back on the hard courts. De Minaur would have lacked the power to be a certainty here anyway but throw in his terrible form and I can’t be going near him. I’ll go with the Serb here.
