2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup – Tuesday 13th July Matches Tips and Betting Preview

The last group to get underway in the CONCACAF Gold Cup is Group D and it does so on Tuesday evening when the opening set of games in it are played out in Houston on what should be another entertaining evening of football.

This is probably the most open of the four groups which should see some competitive matches taking place as the battle to make the top two within it should be pretty intense right from the outset here.

Qatar vs Panama (00.00)

The opening match of the night sees the next hosts of the World Cup, Qatar, begin the invitation they were given into the tournament when they take on a Panama side who competed at the last World Cup but have faded since then.

Although they are the invited team, this is still a big tournament for Qatar. World Cup hosts don’t get the chance to play competitive football very often let alone 15 months out from the tournament they host so the next few weeks is big for them. They are no alsorans. They won the Asian Cup in 2019 and were competitive in the Copa America in the same year. You would think that form would have them competitive here at the very least. Panama have fallen from grace a little from the heady heights of three years ago when they were in the World Cup by right. Panama have started World Cup qualifying for 2022 well but they have been playing a level below the best in this region. They’ll have a go here but Qatar look a notch up to me and if there is a winner here I fancy it could be them.

Honduras vs Grenada (02.00)

The second match of the evening sees the highest ranked side in the group in Honduras taking on a Grenada team who have made strides since the previous Gold Cup but who you would think still have a bit to find if they are to win this match.

Honduras are a side who have improved the stronger the MLS has got and they are definite dangers in this tournament. If they are going to live up to that billing then they will have to win this and they could do with winning it well too in case there is a goal difference separator needed later in the group. Grenada will give this a good go like all the Caribbean sides have so far but I do expect them to be outclassed. We haven’t seen a big gun cover a big handicap yet though so it might be that they are all subconsciously saving something for the latter stages of the tournament which puts me off backing anything here.
