2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup – Wednesday 14th July Matches Tips and Betting Preview

The second set of group matches in the CONCACAF Gold Cup get underway on Wednesday evening when Group A is back on the menu in the double header, which probably wisely after the delays of Tuesday does not come from the same stadium.

That means we get to see Mexico back in action and looking for their first win of the tournament after they were surprisingly held by Trinidad & Tobago in their opener. Mexico are in the second game of the night so you’ll need to be a night owl if you are going to be around to watch it!

Trinidad & Tobago vs El Salvador (00.30)

The opening match of the night sees Trinidad and Tobago looking to cause another upset when they take on the early pacesetters in the section in El Salvador in a match which might just be bigger for the latter given that they face Mexico in their final match.

I would imagine the ‘Soca Warriors’ will be delighted to park the bus in this match and soak up pressure in the hope of either getting a draw or nicking something on the break. A point would leave them on two points ahead of a final game with Guatemala in which were they to win they would almost be certain to progress. El Salvador looked a good offensive unit against Guatemala in their opening match and showed the necessary patience to get the job done even though it was late on. They might need to show all those traits again but if T&T can keep Mexico scoreless, albeit through a brilliant performance from their goalkeeper, then they can lessen the impact of El Salvador. I expect a tight match here but can’t find a way in that I’m comfortable with.

Guatemala vs Mexico (02.30)

The second match of the night comes from the Cotton Bowl over in Dallas where Mexico will look to get their tournament back on track when they go up against the team into the event as the lucky loser in the form of Guatemala.

Guatemala tried their best against El Salvador but in the end you got the impression that a lack of preparation time caught up with them in the end. They have had a few days to get to grips with where they are at ahead of this match but you sense Mexico will be smarting from not breaking through against Trinidad & Tobago and this could be a long night for the minnows. These two played a friendly last season and a mixed Mexico side of first choice players and second string won 3-0. They will be much more at it here, especially as goal difference could come into play, so I’m expect them to put the hammer down here. Guatemala have to get something out of this match to stay in the tournament so when Mexico break through this could open up epically. I like over 3.5 goals in this one as a result of that.
