2021 Grand Slam of Darts – Day 3 Tips and Betting Preview

There is one session of action at the 2021 Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton on Monday evening and it sees the four groups which played in the afternoons over the weekend coming to a close on what is usually a dramatic night of darts.

We have two groups where we have straight knockouts for a place in the last 16 and two groups where all sorts of permutations could transpire and we might even get a nine dart shootout to determine who makes progress.

First Four Matches

We begin the evening with the two dead rubbers between a player who has already qualified and one who can no longer make it through to the next round. The first of those comes in Group D where Ryan Joyce knows he is through but he hasn’t necessarily won the group yet. He will do that if he can beat Chris Dobey, the late entrant into the tournament who will want to depart the event having shown what he can do. Gerwyn Price is in the same situation as Joyce and he’ll win Group A if he can see off Martin Schindler, who will be going home after this match. We then move into Group C where Jim Williams will be looking to push for qualification when he takes on the so far winless Boris Krcmar. Group C then concludes with James Wade facing Rob Cross in a match Wade needs to better the result of Williams in while Cross knows three legs sees him into the second round.

Later Four Matches

Group B gets settled to begin the second half of the evening. Two men who we will be seeing an awful lot of in the future meet when Bradley Brooks takes on Rusty-Jake Rodriguez. Brooks will most likely go through with a win while Rodriguez has to win and win big to have a chance. The other match in the group sees Jonny Clayton taking on Mervyn King. King needs to better Brooks’ result and overturn a big leg difference deficit while a win for Clayton sees him win the group. The night concludes with two matches that are straight knockout for a spot in the last 16. In Group A Krzysztof Ratajski meets Nathan Rafferty while in Group D it is Stephen Bunting taking on Rowby-John Rodriguez.

Betting

I think the favourites are good things in the two straight knockout matches and because winning is the only aim for the pair I’m reluctant to get involved in handicaps and things like that so I’ll take one punt in one of the other matches in the evening which has something riding on it. That comes in the battle of the two Development Tour stars of recent years as Bradley Brooks takes on Rusty-John Rodriguez in a match I fancy the Englishman to win.

Rodriguez is clearly a huge talent but he isn’t quite as used to the big stage as Brooks is at the minute and I think that has shown this week. Rodriguez hasn’t done much wrong but those pressure darts to hold throw or to get in front have gone begging once or twice and some of his scoring passages look just a little frenetic. Brooks has looked a lot more composed and that is to be expected as he is a couple of years further into his career. That composure, especially at the end of legs, can see Brooks to a win here.
