2021 Grand Slam of Darts – Day 4 Tips and Betting Preview

The group stage of the 2021 Grand Slam of Darts concludes in Wolverhampton on Tuesday evening when Groups E-H play their final matches. That means that at the end of the night we will know the full identity of the last 16 line up.

We saw the likes of Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton not just come through on Monday night but also win their group and players such as Michael van Gerwen, Jose de Sousa and Peter Wright will attempt to follow suit on Tuesday.

First Four Matches

Amazingly at this stage in the competition we only have one dead rubber on show and that starts off the evening when Michael Smith goes in search of the win he needs that will guarantee he wins Group H. He faces Joe Davis who will be leaving the tournament at the end of this match. Things get interesting thereafter as Joe Cullen looks for a win which will probably put him into the second phase. He meets Lisa Ashton before Michael van Gerwen looks to win Group G when he takes on John Henderson. Henderson needs to better the Cullen result to qualify. We then move into Group F where Mensur Suljovic will look to move to the verge of qualifying when he takes on Matt Campbell.

Later Four Matches

Group F concludes in the first match of the second half of the night. It would take something bizarre for Jose de Sousa not to make it through but Luke Humphries will need to better the result of Mensur Suljovic if he is to progress. Peter Wright will then look to secure his qualification when he takes on Mike de Decker, who just hasn’t performed at all so far. When they are done Gabriel Clemens meets Fallon Sherrock in a match where a 5-2 win for Sherrock sends her through but she will also be through with a win should Wright have lost. There is just the one knockout match on the night and that is the final match of the evening when Gary Anderson meets Raymond van Barneveld.

Betting

It is that knockout match where my betting interest comes on Tuesday evening. I think Raymond van Barneveld can see off Gary Anderson. I mentioned when I took Barneveld to win this group as a value 4/1 shot at the beginning of the tournament that he is capable of playing well and he has done that twice. It might be that in terms of that bet I am left cursing the Dutchman not holding his throw in the final leg of his opening match against Michael Smith.

In the main Barneveld has played well this week but we can’t say the same about Anderson. He laboured to a pretty unimpressive win over the injured Joe Davis in his first match and wasn’t much better against Smith in the second game. I said when I first assessed this group that Anderson is missing too many doubles on TV at the minute and we’ve seen that in both of his matches so far. He’s under even more pressure here so the natural logic would suggest he’ll miss even more here. This might be the first time Barneveld has been under pressure in this tournament but he won a deciding leg against Brendan Dolan to qualify for this event and that can serve him well here. I like him at odds against.
