The Nitto ATP World Tour Finals continues out in Turin on Tuesday with the third day of action seeing us go back to the singles and doubles stars who were on show on the opening day of the tournament in Italy.
That means these groups play their middle match of the three and it could well be a pivotal day in the overall outcome of both competitions, especially the singles given how evenly matched the players on show appeared on Sunday.
Afternoon Session
Nikola Mektic & Mate Pavic vs Marcel Granollers & Horacio Zeballos
The afternoon session is all about the winners from Sunday so the doubles first up sees the number one seeds Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic looking to move to the verge of qualifying for the semi-finals when they face Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos.
Both these teams got the job done on Sunday but the Croatian pair played much the better of the two. For a set and a half Granollers and Zeballos were getting outplayed but luckily for them Filip Polasek and Ivan Dodig faded quickly allowing the Spanish-Argentine partnership to get the win. They are going to have to up their game here but I sense the quicker conditions aren’t going to suit them. Pavic is probably the stud of the doubles game right now and if he dominates the court like he can there is only one winner of this match. At twos on though I can just let them win.
Daniil Medvedev vs Alexander Zverev
The latest battle in one of the blossoming rivalries in the tennis world forms the singles match on Tuesday afternoon when the US Open champion Daniil Medvedev takes on the Olympic champion Alexander Zverev.
Both men were winners on the opening day of the competition. Medvedev outlasted a game Hubert Hurkacz while Zverev was on the receiving end of the retirement of Matteo Berrettini. It has to be said that Zverev was playing some good tennis prior to the injury of the Italian. Medvedev played well in his first game so we should be in for a cracking contest here. Medvedev destroyed Zverev in Paris recently but the quicker conditions should suit the German a lot more than the sluggish ones in the French capital did. That might allow him to keep this one closer but this is a match to watch and enjoy rather than bet on.

Evening Session
Ivan Dodig & Filip Polasek vs Kevin Krawietz & Horia Tecau
The evening match in the doubles sees the two lower ranked pairings in the group battling it out for their first win of the competition when the Australian Open champions Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek go up against Kevin Krawietz and Horia Tecau, who we now know is retiring at the end of this tournament.
For a set and a half Dodig and Polasek, Polasek in particular, were playing excellent tennis but then their fractious relationship seemed to come to the fore and they suddenly faded badly to lose from a dominant position. That is a concern for me here. Krawietz and Tecau were well beaten in the opening match but they were playing the number one seeds who looked in ominous form in that match. I don’t think they can be judged on that but they certainly looked the more comfortable pairing on the court and if we assume Polasek can’t play like he did in the first match twice in succession then I think Krawietz and Tecau can easily take this down. There is something about the better pairing beating the two individuals that I like so I’m with the German-Romanian duo here.
Matteo Berrettini vs Hubert Hurkacz
The schedule tells us the final match of the third day of action at the Nitto ATP World Tour Finals will see the home star Matteo Berrettini taking on Hubert Hurkacz but I think most people are expecting the Pole to be facing the alternate Jannik Sinner not Berrettini.
Had it been Berrettini then it would have been a repeat of the Wimbledon semi-final from earlier in the season but the Italian knew the second his injury occurred in that opening match that he was done for the week and we can be fairly sure we are seeing Sinner here. That means it will be a repeat of the Miami Open final which Hurkacz won. The tables might be turned here given that Sinner will have a home crowd behind him but he was beaten early in Stockholm last week by Andy Murray and might need a match to get up to speed. For us it doesn’t matter anyway because bookmakers haven’t priced up Hurkacz against Berrettini or Sinner but I expect the Pole to win and might get on him if the odds are backable when they do go up.
