The second quarter of any darts draw is always the most competitive because it sees the number four and five seeds in it and that is no different when it comes to the PDC World Darts Championship which gets underway inside Alexandra Palace on Tuesday evening.
Michael Smith is the top seed in the quarter and he needs a big run here because he made the final of the tournament two years ago and has a lot of money to defend as a result. That might keep the rest of the 24 player section interested here.

Preview
Once again I have split the draw up into a red section and a green section to make deciphering the draw a bit easier. Michael Smith is the top act in the red section but he is going to have his work cut out to go deep in this tournament because Devon Petersen is one of the form players going into the event while Gary Anderson has won the tournament twice and knows how to go the course and distance even if his form isn’t the greatest. All three have plenty of missed doubles in their repertoire though which might keep Mensur Suljovic interested.
The red section is tough enough but the green section looks like a tournament in itself here with three former world champions in the field as well as two very strong qualifiers. Rob Cross is the most recent winner of this event but Adrian Lewis has won it twice. Glen Durrant saw his world titles come in the BDO but his win in the Premier League shows he can handle anything in the PDC while Dirk van Duijvenbode went all the way to the final of the World Grand Prix and Damon Heta is one of the best players outside the top 32. When you add in the likes of Jamie Hughes and Steve Beaton this is a loaded quarter.

You could back any of about 10 players in this section of the draw and get a run for your money. If Mensur Suljovic had any sort of form in this tournament then I’d take him because his doubling probably stands up to anything, certainly in the red half of this quarter, but ultimately he has never been past the third round here which is a concern. I’m not going to have a heart attack waiting for anyone else in the red section to hit a double for me either.
That leaves us in the green section which has a very competitive look about it but which could easily open right up with all four seeds in it not showing their best form in recent times. That makes me think one of the outsiders is the place to go and while we have to start taking Dirk van Duijvenbode seriously it does concern me that he’s only been here once and lost 3-0 with an average below 80. That makes me think the 10/1 on Damon Heta is where we should be looking here. The Australian showed his class when he won one of the World Series events last season and has made three televised quarter finals in the last couple of months, not to mention winning a floor event, making the final of another and landing the Home Tour III title last week. He looks like he’s in great form, is reliable on his doubles and might just have too much for everyone else in this section.
