2021 Scottish Open Snooker Qualifying – Day 2 Tips and Betting Preview

The qualifying competition for the Scottish Open continues on Saturday when another 16 players head onto the baize in Barnsley looking to come out on top in the one match they need to win in order to make it through to the main draw.

Once again the matches come over four sessions of play, two early in the day and then two later on before we find out which eight players will be heading up to Glasgow towards the end of the year. Some decent names are on show on what should be a good day of snooker.

Early Two Sessions

Once again we have sessions getting underway at 10am and 1pm with the earlier of the two sessions seeing the former German Masters winner Anthony Hamilton headlining proceedings. He faces Tian Pengfei in a match which might be one for the purist rather than those who like their action fast and furious. The other match sees Liam Highfield taking on Zhao Jianbo in what might be the easier of the two matches to watch.

Matthew Stevens is one of the household names on show throughout the course of the day. The former world finalist has a meeting with the Chinese amateur Si Jiahui for a place in the main draw. Another Chinese player is on show on the other table when the always entertaining Liang Wenbo takes to the baize. He meets the British Open semi-finalist Elliot Slessor in what might be a contender for the match of the day.

Later Two Sessions

The later sessions begin at 4pm and 7pm with the first of those seeing the other losing semi-finalist in the British Open, Jimmy Robertson, looking to make it through to the main draw when he takes on Jamie O’Neill. The other match should be a good one too as Joe O’Connor looks to continue his decent recent form when he takes on a Jamie Jones who had a good first season back on the tour but who hasn’t started this term as well as he would have liked.

Tom Ford is the biggest name on show over the course of the day in terms of the world rankings and he has been saved to headline the evening session. He takes on Peter Lines who will be looking to follow in the footsteps of his son Oliver who qualified on Friday evening. The other match in the evening session sees Mark Davis going up against a Michael White who will be looking for a huge improvement after losing to Stephen Hendry in English Open qualifying earlier in the week.

Betting

I will go with one bet over the course of the day and it comes in the third of the four sessions where I’m happy to take on a Jamie Jones who did well in the Championship League and was unlucky not to escape his initial group. Since then though he has played in the British Open and the qualifying competitions for the English Open and Northern Ireland Open and lost in the first match of all three of them so his confidence is likely to be a little on the low side.

He now takes on Joe O’Connor who has had the opposite time of it thus far. He won three matches at the British Open before going down in a deciding frame to Zhou Yuelong and then he won his English Open qualifying match against the competent Chinese player Pang Junxu in a match where he slammed in three breaks over 50 so the Leicester potter is going well right now. He’s a solid all-rounder who can score and scrap it out at similar levels whereas I feel if Jones doesn’t score well he doesn’t win. I like the Englishman in this Anglo-Welsh tussle.
