The opening day of the World Grand Prix sees the Cazoo Series getting underway with just the one session to allow all those who went deep in Llandudno last week the chance for some rest before a big tournament gets going in Coventry on Monday evening.
We might be restricted to just the four matches but there is no shortage of big names on show as we get to see four of the best players from the season so far looking for more ranking points which will lead them deeper in the Cazoo Series.
Main Table
There will be two matches on the main TV table on Monday evening and we get going in this tournament with the man who thrilled us all in winning the UK Championship eight days ago in Zhao Xintong. The number one seed will take on the last man into the field in the form of Martin Gould. When those two have settled their match two of the best players in the world will grace the main table when the British Open champion Mark Williams has a date with the man who lost in the final of this tournament last year in Jack Lisowski.
Table Two
It is not just the main table which the star names have been restricted to. They come along readily over on Table Two on Monday evening as well. The action over there begins with The Masters champion on show when Yan Bingtao takes on a player who reached the last four of the English Open last month in Mark King. The second match on show over on Table Two sees Kyren Wilson starting his campaign to get off to a winning start in the Cazoo Series. ‘The Warrior’ faces the ‘Sheriff of Pottingham’ Anthony Hamilton.

Betting
I’ll open up my betting for the week with a couple of bets with the first being to take on Zhao Xintong with a Martin Gould who is perfectly competent and who is more experienced on this sort of stage than the new UK Championship winner. Zhao’s life will have changed completely over the last week and it is so hard to keep your feet on the ground and back up a life changing week so soon after. We have seen it time and time again and for all the quality that Zhao showed in York, there are still parts of his game that need to be polished up on. Gould had a good week at the Scottish Open last week before he ran into John Higgins in the third round and I think he is decent value to put paid to the top seed here.
It is well known that Mark Williams has been recovering from Covid-19 recently and when he isn’t getting scared by a snowman at his front door (check his Twitter feed if you’ve not seen it) he is falling asleep on the job! I expect Williams to be stronger than what we saw of him in the UK Championship but the fact he didn’t play the Scottish Open in his own country last week suggests he isn’t 100% still and will only be playing here for the points to get further down the line for the Players Championship. That opens up a huge opportunity for Jack Lisowski to come through and win this one. Lisowski looked in good order in the UK Championship until he ran into the eventual winner in the quarter final. An early defeat in the Scottish last week was probably a hangover from that but odds against on Lisowski against a man who isn’t 100% will do for me.
