After two thrilling rounds of snooker action so far this week the Shanghai Masters has made it down to the quarter final stage with all four matches being played on the televised tables across the two sessions of play on Friday.
This is the last day that the matches are the best of nine frames and everyone likes to get down to the one table set up so all eight men will be eager to deliver the goods in their respective quarter final.
Early Session
The first two quarter finals come from the bottom of the draw. Mark Selby has made it through and he will take on Ryan Day in one of the matches while the other match in the session is between Stuart Bingham and Ali Carter in a repeat of their World Championship first round clash.
Late Session
Everyone involved in the tournament was hoping for a Ding Junhui vs Ronnie O’Sullivan match in this session but nobody told Michael Holt who promptly took care of the Rocket in the previous round. Therefore it is him who will face the Chinese superstar and not O’Sullivan. The other match sees Judd Trump’s conqueror, Michael White, taking on Stephen Maguire.
Betting
I’m already on Stuart Bingham outright in this tournament so I’m not going to get involved in his match and the other one in the early session doesn’t really float my boat either so I’m looking to the later session for my bet.
I was hoping to make it a hat trick of bets on Stephen Maguire but bookmakers have worked out how well he is playing and he is probably a little too short against Michael White although I’m certainly not advocating taking the Scot on.
The other game does interest me though. I was so impressed with Michael Holt in the win over Ronnie O’Sullivan. He had a game plan which was clear as day that was to keep everything at long range and then feast on the mistakes that were always going to come either by O’Sullivan not being at the races or him getting frustrated which was eventually the outcome.
Ding has had a couple of decent wins this week but he hasn’t hit a century yet and I always feel he is one of those who you can judge his form by how his scoring is. I’m expecting Holt to employ the same tactics he used against O’Sullivan and that could well be the key to success once again. I’ll take him in this one.
