The Masters gets underway on Thursday but before it does there is an opportunity to look at a few of the nationality markets and the specials prior to the opening tee shot. As with most majors there are a lot of side markets to go at for this tournament but we’ve picked out three which offer some great bets.
Top German
This is a two man market with Martin Kaymer and Bernhard Langer the only Germans to make it into the competition. Langer is a former champion around here having won the tournament in 1985 and 1993 so there isn’t an inch of Augusta that he doesn’t know and I would imagine admire.
This isn’t Martin Kaymer’s favourite track and that is purely down to one thing which is his ball flight. He prefers moving the ball from left to right and it is the opposite which you need to success around here. The facts are simple. Langer has been in the top 25 in three of the last four years here and is still thriving on the Champions Tour. Kaymer has never broken the top 30 around here so the 7/4 Langer in this match is too tempting to ignore.
Top Englishman
There are 11 Englishmen teeing it up this week with Justin Rose the most fancied of them to the amateur Scott Gregory who is a huge price to upset the more established stars. There are experienced players around here in Paul Casey, Lee Westwood and the defending champion Danny Willett and plenty of inexperience too.
Paul Casey, Lee Westwood and Justin Rose all have excellent records around here. Westwood has had six top 11 finishes in the last seven years while Casey has finished in the top 10 in the last two years. Justin Rose has also been in the top 10 in the last two years and he comes in here playing good golf. We know he sets his schedule around the majors and his tee to green strength makes him a leading player both in this market and the tournament this week. He’s my idea of the top Englishman.

Top Senior
Steve Stricker heads the betting in this market but I wonder if a lack of competitive golf makes him vulnerable to the two men who have been tearing up the Champions Tour recently in Bernhard Langer and Freddy Couples. Vijay Singh can’t completely be ruled out either.
My gut feeling is that Stricker won’t just suffer from a lack of starts but also the weather conditions which have made the course very long so I’m keen on one of the others and that is Fred Couples. Couples is still getting it out there which at his age is a real achievement and length is going to be a big thing this week. The rest of Couples’ game is in good order so he can lead the seniors in the field.
