The opening match of the Caribbean Premier League sees the newly named St Lucia Stars taking on the ridiculously named Trinbago Knight Riders as the self-dubbed greatest party on earth gets going with a bang.
This match sees one of the underrated sides taking on the tournament favourites at the Darren Sammy Cricket Stadium and we should get off to an exciting start to the competition.
St Lucia Stars
I will be interested to see how the Stars go in this match. In Darren Sammy they have a wonderful captain and in fairness their batting line up looks very solid so we should get plenty of fireworks from the Stars with the likes of Johnson Charles, Andre Fletcher and Kamran Akmal all extremely dangerous on their day.
The bowling has an overseas look to it which I’m not always a fan of in these competitions but with the clever fields that Sammy will set there is no reason why that part of the game can’t go well too so I really am expecting the Stars to go well, especially in their own stadium where they generally play well.
Trinbago Knight Riders
The Knight Riders carry the favourites tag into the competition with them and there will be pressure on because of that but they have a number of experienced players in their squad who are used to being with big franchises so I am not expecting that to be much of an issue. This is a side packed with talent.
Their batting line up looks very strong and with Kevon Cooper in the side they have the potential to bat very deep and their bowling attack and the options they have at their disposal are among the strongest in the competition so they look a really good outfit with both the bat and the ball hence their position in the market.
Team News
St Lucia have plenty of options in terms of overseas players for this match with Shane Watson likely to be a certain starter. Jesse Ryder could be in action too as could Mitchell McClenaghan.
The line up of Trinbago will be interesting to see given the amount of options they have. Hashim Amla wouldn’t have been playing anyway as he is with South Africa but he has been ruled out of the tournament.

Betting
I’m going with just a quiet start to the tournament. I was tempted to back the St Lucia Stars as I do believe home advantage can count for a lot in this tournament but I just can’t bring myself to take on this Trinbago outfit.
Instead I will head for the sixes for a bet on the match where a line of 12.5 feels low. While I accept there are some good bowlers on show you wouldn’t think with this being the opening match of a tournament they are trying hard to promote that there will be much in it for those bowlers. I expect the big shots to flow on a decent batting wicket and with that in mind I’ll go with the overs.
