Market Leaders

James Collins is the 9/1 favourite to top score in the division this season and after having previously good campaigns with Northampton Town and Shrewsbury in this league not to mention banging them in for Crawley last term the common logic would suggest he is a worthy favourite not he has moved to Luton who could well enjoy themselves in the scoring department.

Unfortunately for those looking to back Collins and indeed the second favourite Danny Hylton is that Luton have two prolific strikers who could well share the goals around this season so even at 12/1 there is not too much value in the former Oxford man especially as he begins the season on the sidelines.

John Akinde has had a couple of decent seasons in this league with Barnet and he is also a 12/1 shot. He will score a significant percentage of Barnet’s goals but whether they score enough for him to be competitive remains to be seen.

Lee Angol has joined Mansfield via Lincoln and is the man given the task of spearheading the Stags’ challenge to convert their summer spending into glory. I’m not convinced he is physical enough for this division so at 14/1 I can pass him over. Matt Godden had a good season for Stevenage last year but it is doubtful whether he can repeat that. He is 16/1 for those who wish to back him and it is 20/1 bar.

Profile

If we look at the previous winners of the golden boot in this division a trend is that most of them came in sides that won promotion so that seems like a decent place to start in terms of narrowing down the field.

I’ve already mentioned that I expect Luton to share the goals around this season so we can rule them out which has me looking at a few other clubs I expect to go well. They are Mansfield, Coventry, Lincoln, Accrington and Port Vale.

That gives us the likes of Lee Angol who I don’t fancy, Marc McNulty, Matt Green, Billy Kee and Tom Pope and I am going to take a couple of those for the season.

Betting

Marc McNulty has a decent spell for Portsmouth in this division a couple of seasons ago and he is in a Coventry side who should be able to score some goals this season. He has scored goals in higher leagues than this one and is unlikely to leave the division so soon after joining Coventry so at 20/1 he looks a good bet.

Tom Pope has already top scored in this division in the past and I believe he and Port Vale are a good fit so at 40/1 I can’t resist a wager on him this season too. Port Vale seem to have been written off in most places but I’m not so sure they should be. I think they’ll go well enough and Pope’s natural instinct for goals can be a real feature in that.
