The final midweek match of the regular Sky Bet League 2 season takes place at the Proact Stadium on Tuesday evening when relegated Chesterfield host a Newport County side who may well be reflecting on what might have been this season.
This match will be the final one for Chesterfield as a Football League club and I can say from experience that is a tough and sombre time. Newport could finish in the top 10 with a good last two matches which would represent a vast improvement on last term.
Chesterfield
As is so often the case when a side are at the bottom of the table, managers have come and gone in Derbyshire this season but nothing has really had the desired effect. One thing that is for certain is that with the personnel they have Chesterfield have very much underachieved this term and they’ve done so in a big way.
Despite their struggles, Chesterfield have one of the leading scorers in the division in Kristian Dennis which highlights what might have been for them over the course of the season. They have just been unable to get consistent wins together and to be fair rather tamely exited the division. They now have four defeats in a row.
Newport County
This was a campaign which begun so well for the Welsh outfit. They were riding high and in the playoff places for much of the first half of the season but they seemed to lose their way when the rain was at its most relentless which also coincided with that cup tie against Tottenham and their trip to Wembley.
In previous seasons Newport have looked one of the worst sides in the division but now when you look at their attacking options it is not difficult to see why they are pushing for a top 10 finish. From where they were 15 months ago their turnaround has been dramatic and if they can continue their improvement at such a rate next season could be a big one for them.
Team News
It appears that Ian Evatt has an unchanged squad to pick from in his second match in charge. He left Chris O’Grady out of the defeat to Wycombe on Saturday and there are no signs that he will be involved here either.
Newport could be unchanged after back-to-back wins although if Michael Flynn does want to freshen his side up then players such as David Pipe, Aaron Collins and Paul Hayes could be pushing for starting berths.

Betting
Sometimes you get end of season matches that are worth betting on and then the majority of the time we get ones that you wouldn’t bet on with stolen money and this one looks to be very much the latter one of those options.
Chesterfield look to be tamely exiting the league while Newport are no great shakes on the road. The Welsh side might be in decent form but seven of their last eight matches have been at home to distort that ledger. Newport are the better side but with no motivation and with no value on them I’m in no rush to bet.
