World Cup 2018 – Group G Final Matches Betting Preview

Heading into the final set of matches in Group G of the World Cup we know the two sides who will go through and the two who will depart the competition at the end of these fixtures so it is top spot that is up for grabs.

England will take on Belgium for the top honours in the section while in the other match Tunisia and Panama will exit the tournament after they’ve had their own ding dong to avoid the wooden spoon.

England vs Belgium

Usually it is the winner takes all in sport but in a strange quirk it might be the loser who benefits best here as the side of the draw which includes the second placed team in this group looks the one to be in. England will win the group if they avoid defeat here.

England are right up there in terms of the teams of the tournament so far. They have been on the front foot throughout with outstanding movement and quality on show not to mention a real clinical edge. Unlike a lot of the sides we’ve seen, England have gone out looking to dominate matches from the start and get themselves in front and then control the match from there.

It sounds silly to be disappointed with a team when they have scored eight goals in the tournament but I have been a bit annoyed with Belgium. They have been on easy street for their two matches so far when if they had let the handbrake off a little they could have scored even more than they have got. The positive thing is that the big players have shown up although I do wish they would adopt Kevin de Bruyne further forward. That will be for another time though because Roberto Martinez is set to change his entire set of outfield players here.

Panama vs Tunisia

While the focus is on top spot in the group both Panama and Tunisia will be playing to leave the tournament with a win which will keep their fans content at the very least and restore some pride after both took a rotten beating last time out.

Panama have been found to be completely out of their depth in this tournament, especially in defensive areas where they just are not good enough. If England hadn’t gone easy on them in the second half that match could have turned nasty, as it was the score was pretty bad, and Belgium only played for 20 minutes too luckily for them. On the flip side they have created some chances.

Tunisia have looked better than Panama thus far but that is hardly a ringing endorsement to their showing in the tournament. They look just as bad defensively and can be easily exposed but to be fair to them they have held their own when going forward which is to their credit. They will expect to win this one I would imagine.

Betting

I’m already on Belgium to win the main match having backed them to win the group although I suspect I’ve done by dough with the way the draw has turned out but I do like both teams to score in this match. England seem adamant that they are going out to win the match while Belgium are making 10 changes and everyone who comes in will want to prove themselves ahead of the knockout match to come. England do look frail defensively but they look awesome going forward so a shade under evens for both teams to score looks good to me.

I’ll also have a small bet on Michy Batshuayi to score anytime. He might feel he has a point to prove against English opposition having failed to make his mark at Chelsea and also he will be wanting goals to force his way into the side. He could very easily be coming up against a Chelsea teammate here which might add to his spice and 11/4 in a match where he’s expected to start looks a corking price.

Ironically enough given that both sides are already out it might be that the most competitive of the two matches is the one between Panama and Tunisia and I believe over 2.5 goals is the way to go in this one. Neither of these two teams can defend and there is no point in either of them sitting back and playing out time so I’m expecting both to have a go and showcase their talents and look for that elusive World Cup win. That should lead us to more than 2.5 goals.

I also expect the cards to keep coming in this match as well. We have a referee from Bahrain for this match and he has taken charge of one game in the tournament where he dished out three cards in a pretty tame match between Poland and Senegal. I don’t see these two fiery outfits being tame at any point. Tempers could easily flare here and with that in mind over 3.5 cards looks a pretty simple bet too.

Having seen how woefully Tunisia defend set pieces I can’t resist a little piece of the 17/2 that Roman Torres scores anytime. We’ve seen a big MLS defender pop up for Costa Rica in this round of matches and Torres will be a threat from set pieces. He should have scored against England and given how bad Tunisia are defending crosses he’s worth a small bet here.
