The second half of the US Open begins on Sunday when the top half of both singles draws play down to the quarter finals across the main courts at Flushing Meadows in New York. We’re heading towards the business end now so things are beginning to get serious.
There might only be eight singles matches on show on Sunday but there are stacks of big names taking to the courts on what should be a day of excellent tennis once again in the Big Apple.
Day 6 Recap
It was another epic day of action on Saturday although perhaps not in the games we expected it in. Roger Federer and Nick Kyrgios was the hugely billed match but that became a no contest as Federer breezed through. Elsewhere David Goffin cruised through but Alexander Zverev and Lucas Pouille tumbled out. Marin Cilic looked like joining them until he came from 2-0 down to Alex de Minaur to win a decider in a match that finished at 2.22am. In the women’s draw there were comfortable wins for Maria Sharapova and Aryna Sabalenka but Angelique Kerber and Petra Kvitova were well beaten. Madison Keys and Caroline Garcia survived deciding sets.
It was a much better day for us betting wise. Although the daily accumulator went down we won three of our four singles bets with two of them landing at 7/4 and 7/5 prices for a very good profit on the day. That gives us something to build on for Sunday.
Arthur Ashe Stadium
So far in this tournament we have seen Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams dominate most of the night sessions but they get the daytime treatment on Sunday. Nadal goes up against the mercurial shot maker that is Nikoloz Basilashvili while Serena looks to book a spot in another quarter final when she takes on Kaia Kanepi.
Serena’s appearance in the day session means that the night is all about the defending champion Sloane Stephens. She gets to open up the evening when she faces the confident and extremely competent Elise Mertens before the men close out the show when Juan Martin del Potro takes on the exciting Borna Coric.
Louis Armstrong Stadium
There are three singles matches on the secondary court on Sunday with all of them coming in the day session. Dominic Thiem opens up the show against Kevin Anderson with Rafael Nadal potentially awaiting the winner in the quarter final. Ash Barty then goes up against Karolina Pliskova in the second match on the court before the big servers collide when John Isner and Milos Raonic have a potential ace off.
Grandstand
The other singles match on Sunday comes from the Grandstand where Elina Svitolina continues her quest for a maiden Grand Slam title. She faces Anastasija Sevastova in what promises to be a high octane, power packed match which begins not before 10pm but could be later than that with three doubles matches beforehand so could very easily end up being under the lights.

Men’s Betting
I’m expecting some lengthier matches than the bookmakers on Sunday and there are two total games lines that look a touch on the low side to me. On the face of it you would suggest that a 45.5 games line is plenty high enough when John Isner takes on Milos Raonic but I’m not sure it will be high enough. The humidity is set to be intense once again in New York on Sunday so the courts will quicken up and the ball will fly through the air. That should help these two men hold serve so I’m expecting plenty of tiebreaks. Of the 13 sets they have played nine of them have gone to a tiebreak so there is enough to suggest that as long as this is not won in straight sets, and I’m not convinced it will be, then the games line should cover.
I also think the 37.5 games line between Juan Martin del Potro and Borna Coric is a little on the high side too. Del Potro struggles against players with good backhands who can naturally keep the ball on his backhand and Coric fits that bill nicely. What he doesn’t fit though is the model of consistency so while I would expect the Argentine to do enough to win the match there will be a period in this contest where Coric is on top. I don’t see this being done in straight sets either so over 37.5 games is the way forward for me here.
Women’s Betting
It looks like being a fascinating day in the women’s draw but I like the look of all the favourites however one who might be taken the distance is Elina Svitolina. She faces Anastasija Sevastova who is usually relentless on the court with her power and her never say die attitude. I like what I’ve seen from Svitolina in this tournament though and I think she’s ready to fight fire with fire so with that in mind over 21.5 games looks the way forward here.

Once again we had no joy on the daily accumulator front on Saturday so we are down to 2-4 for the week and £61.59 profit for it too. Straight wins all the way for us on Sunday.
