Two sides currently sitting outside the top four in the Big Bash League table meet in a huge game for the pair of them when the Perth Scorchers take on the Sydney Thunder at the Optus Stadium in the sole match on Thursday.
With matches beginning to run out in the regular campaign, wins are pretty paramount for the pair of them. It looks as though the Perth Scorchers are going to have to win out to have any chance of making the finals. Sydney will go back into the top four with a win here.
Perth Scorchers
A run of two wins in a row was ended last time out when the Perth Scorchers ran into the Hobart Hurricanes and came up a little short of what was required but they should take heart from their performance. It was far from their worst of the tournament so there is no reason why they shouldn’t believe they can kick on again now that they have got the leaders out of the way.
The Scorchers’ bowling attack has become a little ragged so the ODIs ending when they have done will be perfectly timed for the Western outfit. The good thing though is that their batting has finally come to the party and if they can remain in the form they have shown recently then there is no reason why the Scorchers can’t string wins together.
Sydney Thunder
After a positive start to the season, the Sydney Thunder have now won just one of their last five matches and that is a poor run at the worst time. Admittedly they surely would have had a second win had the power not disappeared up in Brisbane but even so they will know they haven’t been good enough for long enough in this recent run.
Heading to the bottom team in the table might have come at the right time for the Thunder but as a whole they are going to need to bat better than they have done. If they can do that then there is enough evidence to suggest that they have what is required with the ball to deliver the goods, but this has not been a consistent outfit very often.
Team News
Perth Scorchers have some big players back for this match with the Marsh brothers and Jason Behrendorff returning from the ODI squad. Liam Guthrie also comes into the squad with Jhye Richardson playing in the Test match. Sam Whiteman and David Willey miss out.
Sydney Thunder will be fielding a rookie wicket keeper with Jay Lenton ruled out of the match. Nathan McAndrew comes into the squad with Arjun Nair and Jono Cook missing out. Kurtis Patterson is away with Australia.

Betting
I think we might see a high scoring game here, or certainly a high six hitting match. There were 17 sixes in the last match on this ground which suggests that the wicket at Optus Stadium is finally beginning to bed in and we’ve got a couple of sides who have suddenly burst into life with the bat. In an ideal world we would want Sydney Thunder to be a little more consistent with the bat but they should have enough.
With the dimensions of this ground and the hitting power that is on show now that all the ODI players are back I’m comfortable thinking that there will be more than 8.5 sixes in this one. The likes of Shane Watson, Anton Devcich, Cameron Bancroft, Mitch Marsh and Ashton Turner all hit a long ball and with a couple of other solid players too we can go beyond 8.5 sixes here.
