We are down to the semi-final stage in the German Masters with both matches on the main table inside the Tempodrom on Saturday. This is the stage where the tournament really comes alive as one table gets the attention of packed houses.
Friday was one of carnage for a lot of big names and as such we are left with a surprising semi-final line up but one that is fairly intriguing for all number of reasons. They take place over the best of 11 frames on what should be a good day of snooker.
Duane Jones vs Dave Gilbert
Two men who probably won’t have been expecting to be in the semi-final this weekend meet in the first of the two matches when Welsh player Duane Jones competes in his first match at this stage of a ranking event when he takes on Dave Gilbert, who is in his second semi of the season.
Credit must go to Jones to get this far. He has beaten both Jack Lisowski and Ding Junhui along the way and he has deservedly done so too. He has scored heavily, got in front and powered clear and that is a good sign. Gilbert is a classy player who surely has to have a ranking title in him. It could come this week but the pressure of being a favourite here is right on him.
I fancy we might see a really good semi-final here if Jones can get into it early doors. This tournament has a habit of throwing up surprise finalists so we shouldn’t rule him out. There is something inside of me that says he may well come through here as I never trust Gilbert under pressure or as a favourite. I do think it will be close though so I’ll have a small punt on Jones and a bigger one on over 9.5 frames.

Kyren Wilson vs Stephen Maguire
With no disrespect to the two men involved in the afternoon session, the main course of the semi-final day is the evening clash between Kyren Wilson and Stephen Maguire. Wilson is looking for a second German final this season after winning the Paul Hunter Classic while Maguire has been out of the winners’ circle for far too long and is two winnable matches away from ending that barren run.
Both men had standout results in the quarter finals on Friday night. Wilson’s might have been more appealing in that he took care of Mark Williams 5-0 but Maguire’s win over Judd Trump might actually have been the better victory given how well the Englishman has been playing over the last few months. Whichever way you look at it both these men look in excellent form and ready to win this title.
Given that whoever wins this match will be overwhelming favourites in the final, there is an argument that suggests this might be the last stumbling block on the way to the title and with that in mind I’m expecting a tight battle here. I’ll take over 9.5 frames in this one.
