The semi-finals of the World Championship continue inside the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield on Friday and if the first day of them is anything to go by then we are set for quite a day of snooker over the three sessions.
The first semi-final will play out the morning and the evening session with the afternoon belonging to the second semi-final. Both matches are wonderfully poised after their opening period of play so there is much to look forward to on Friday.

Dave Gilbert and John Higgins were first down the steps into the one table setup and when Higgins went 2-0 up there were fears that it could be a long few days for Gilbert, but once the Englishman got on the board he let his cueing arm flow and should have won the last six frames. As it is he won five of them to lead 5-3 overnight. There was no separating Gary Wilson and Judd Trump in the second semi-final. They will play their session on Friday locked at 4-4 with the highlight being a fantastic 140 break from the Geordie, who settled to the environment really well.

In Play Betting
I’m tempted to get involved with Dave Gilbert in the first semi-final but I’ve got it in my mind that Higgins’ experience wins this tournament now. I’m not passing up the chance to get stuck into the second semi though where I don’t see Gary Wilson going away at any stage. I think Judd Trump has a few issues heading into the second session on Friday.
The first probably he has is apart from one session against Stephen Maguire, Trump has been ordinary in this tournament. Already it is beginning to look like Trump needed the occasion to beat Wilson. It hasn’t done so and actually Wilson was the best player in the first session. He didn’t get what his play deserved in terms of the scoreline but there was a confidence to his demeanour and his presence that suggests to me that he is enjoying the job. I don’t buy all that nonsense that he has nothing to lose at this stage of the tournament but it doesn’t matter anyway. Nobody is playing better snooker than Wilson at the minute and he’s too big at 10/3 to come through this match.
