We reach the halfway stage of the British Masters on Friday when the field go out and play the second round at Hillside Golf Club. It was a low scoring opening day of the competition so we are looking at a cut a good deal under par.
Those who had a good start on Thursday will be looking to consolidate it and get themselves in a position to pounce over the weekend while those who didn’t get going all that well on Thursday will be looking for a big second round to be here for the weekend.
Round 1 Recap
At the end of the first round it was the unheralded and little known Matthew Jordan who held a two shot advantage after carding a wonderful nine under 63. He leads by two from Marcus Kinhult and Matt Wallace who are on seven under with a group of players another shot back on six under par that includes our main pre-tournament pick Lee Westwood. Thomas Detry, Robert Karlsson and Richie Ramsay make up that group while tournament host Tommy Fleetwood is a couple further back on four under.
Sadly we had no joy at all with the first round leader bets and it was actually a frustrating day for us on the betting front with Paul Dunne bogeying the last to lose his three ball by a shot despite Nacho Elvira being five under after the first five holes. We did get some joy with Tom Lewis though. He easily won his three ball to have us just above even for those with three rounds left to build on them this week.
Friday Betting
The second round leader market isn’t really one I want to go at for the simple reason that it is priced up about right. If Lee Westwood wasn’t out with Matt Wallace then there could be scope to back him but he is and you would think they would cover each other’s moves. If the weather suits the afternoon starters more than the morning ones then there is a case to be made for the tournament host Tommy Fleetwood but all in all the market feels about right, especially with the top quality towards the top of the leaderboard waiting to burst through. With that in mind it is the three balls for me once again on Friday.

Friday 3 Balls
The players are out in the same groups they were out in on Thursday but swapped around in terms of wave so the Lee Westwood, Matt Wallace and Joost Luiten group headlines the morning starters and the Tommy Fleetwood, Eddie Pepperell and Stephen Gallacher three ball the main focus of attention in the afternoon. There are plenty of other groups out on the links for the crowds to enjoy and for us to bet on and I’m betting in one of them.
Tom Lewis/Adrian Otaegui/Aaron Rai
Match tees off at 13.20 BST
Among the afternoon groups out onto the golf course is the one I took on Thursday morning where Tom Lewis is paired alongside Adrian Otaegui and Aaron Rai. Lewis won this group by a shot from Otaegui and seven from Rai.
I fancy Lewis to win this group once again too. Rai needs a miracle to make the cut so he might have to push more than he would want to here while Otaegui didn’t convince me on Thursday. Lewis won this group despite parring his last 10 holes so there is a whole lot more to come from him on Friday with the better conditions suiting him more as he is the longest of the trio off the tee. I think he has the beating of his playing partners once again here.
