The first round of the singles draws will come to a close in the US Open on Tuesday as New York gets set to see those who are yet to get their campaigns underway across the grounds at Flushing Meadows, on day two of the final Grand Slam of the year.
We have the likes of Rafael Nadal, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Naomi Osaka, Karolina Pliskova and Sloane Stephens on the main courts on Tuesday on an absolutely packed schedule in both the day and night sessions so there is a lot to enjoy.
Day 1 Recap
It was a wonderful first day of the tournament with thrilling matches, excellent tennis, the odd shock and some real star quality delivering the goods. We saw easy wins for Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams but Roger Federer and Ash Barty were pushed more than they would have wanted to be. Daniil Medvedev was another easy winner on the day but there were upsets for Fabio Fognini and Angelique Kerber. Others to enjoy tight wins on the first day include Jo Konta, Stan Wawrinka and David Goffin.
It was a very mixed day for us betting wise. We got rewarded with Kiki Mladenovic covering the handicap against Angelique Kerber, although it was annoying that she got over the line. Pablo Carreno Busta outlasted Guido Pella as well but sadly Daria Kasatkina, Adrian Mannarino and Fabio Fognini all won a set and looked good in others but couldn’t convert.

Arthur Ashe Stadium
The defending champion and world number one Naomi Osaka gets the action underway on the main court on Tuesday when she begins her title defence against young Russian, Anna Blinkova, in a match the Japanese star should win. Indian Wells champion Dominic Thiem offers up the star quality in the men’s match in the day session when he goes up against Eastbourne semi-finalist Thomas Fabbiano in what could be a trickier match than the Austrian might like at this stage.
The evening session kicks off with the man expected to come right through the bottom half of the draw in Rafael Nadal taking on John Millman. If Nadal thinks this will be a walkover he only needs to ask his rival Roger Federer of the qualities the Australian possesses as he dumped him out last year. Former champion Sloane Stephens follows them. She faces off with the lowly ranked Anna Kalinskaya in what looks like a nice evening on the court for the American.
Louis Armstrong Stadium
The mouth-watering clash between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev gets proceedings underway on the second court before the Wimbledon champion Simona Halep begins her quest for successive Grand Slam titles as she faces Nicole Gibbs. A little later in the day session we have another women’s match on court when the young sensation Coco Gauff goes up against Anastasia Potapova who is sure to have a large crowd against her at this time of day.
The night session on this court looks absolutely quality too as the Belarussian pair of Aryna Sabalenka and Victoria Azarenka face off to get it underway. That looks like being a great match, as does the second offering which puts home man Steve Johnson up against the exciting but sometimes ridiculous Nick Kyrgios in one of the matches of the day.
Grandstand
You rarely get a bad schedule on the Grandstand court and we don’t have one on Tuesday either. Former Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza gets the action underway when she meets the talented Alison Riske before another American takes to the court when John Isner meets Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Caroline Wozniacki is a former beaten finalist in this event so she knows how to go deep in New York and she’ll begin her quest to win this title against Yafan Wang in the third match of the day before the action on this court concludes with the two exciting Canadians facing off as Denis Shapovalov goes up against Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Court 17
The schedule out on Court 17 is usually of a decent quality as well and it begins with the Australian Open finalist Petra Kvitova taking on her fellow Czech player Denisa Allertova before Kiki Bertens begins her tournament. She will go up against Paula Badosa. Alexander Zverev will look to get his first Grand Slam title in New York this year and he begins that quest against Radu Albot in the third match on the court before a little later in the day the big serving Ivo Karlovic takes on the American favourite Frances Tiafoe.
Best of the Rest
As you would expect with no fewer than 64 singles matches on the schedule on Tuesday, there are a number of top players spread around the grounds at Flushing Meadows. Belinda Bencic is one of those while former champion Marin Cilic, Toronto champion Bianca Andreescu, Gael Monfils, Kyle Edmund, Roberto Bautista Agut and Diego Schwartzman are just some of the other many seeds who are in action out and about the New York complex.

Men’s Betting
There are three bets that I like in the men’s draw once again on Tuesday. The first of them comes right from the start where Stefanos Tsitsipas takes on Andrey Rublev in a match I fancy to be very close and long. The Greek star hasn’t been in the best of form in recent times but if there is one thing we know about him it is that he will battle throughout. Rublev has probably displayed the best form in this hard court swing but he might well struggle to maintain his form for the duration of the five sets. I’m not massively certain who will win this match. I wouldn’t be surprised if it is the Russian but the more comfortable pick is for there to be more than 37.5 games.
One match which I don’t see being very close is the one between Albert Ramos-Vinolas and Gael Monfils where I’m expecting the Frenchman to dominate in a pretty one-sided contest. These two have met on a couple of occasions on a hard court and the Spaniard has won a total of seven games in four sets. I’m not convinced he’s going to fare too much better here in conditions that should suit Monfils. We saw in Montreal that the Frenchman is in good form and I would be surprised if he doesn’t cover 5.5 games here against the aging Ramos-Vinolas.
Moving into the night session and I’m expecting a lengthy affair between Steve Johnson and Nick Kyrgios. You would think tiebreaks are the order of the day in this one. I wouldn’t say neither can rally or anything like that but there is no doubt their serve is their biggest weapon. The game line for this one is 38.5 which can be covered with three tiebreaks but I fancy four sets anyway so I like the over here.
Women’s Betting
I’ll go with a couple in the women’s draw too where Alison Riske looks a fair price to see off a Garbine Muguruza who struggles with her game on a hard court. The American is a clean hitter of the ball but we saw the variety she has in her game with her run at Wimbledon as well. This is a tough test for Muguruza and if she does come through it she’ll be made to work very hard. I fancy the American’s power will have an impact the longer it goes and so I’m siding with the value here.
Caroline Wozniacki is a player I’ve identified to take on recently. She rarely wins easily at the best of times and that is certainly the case when she takes on those in the top 50 in the world. Yafan Wang is an improving player who like so many from Asia can hit a clean ball but who can also defend too. Wozniacki is always vulnerable to big hitters and while the Dane might find a way to come out on top I don’t see it being for more than 4.5 games.
