MLS Playoffs 2019 – Saturday 19th October Matches Tips and Betting Preview

The MLS postseason begins on Saturday night when four of the six first round matches in the playoffs take place on what has all the makings of a wonderful night of football to keep us entertained for hours.

Both Conferences will be on show in the straight knockout matches which unlike previous seasons are just the one leg rather than two. It is win and go through to the quarter finals. Lose and it is season done.

Atlanta United vs New England Revolution (18.00)

The postseason kicks off with the defending champions Atlanta United looking to make it into the second round of games when they host a New England Revolution who were rejuvenated under experienced coach Bruce Arena.

These two sides met to close off the regular season when Atlanta won 3-1 but both sides knew their fate then and there is the suspicion that this one will be a much different encounter. That loss was the first in five for New England but they have drawn six of their last 10 and are finding getting over the line difficult. I would expect Atlanta to win this but there is no way I’m backing a side at twos on in the pressurised environment of the playoffs.

Seattle Sounders vs FC Dallas (20.30)

The first match of the playoffs from the Western Conference sees the former champions Seattle Sounders taking on FC Dallas in a match which is expected to be extremely hard fought and potentially tight throughout.

The consensus is that Seattle will win this with a bit to spare but they haven’t beaten FC Dallas this season which will keep the visitors interested here. My big concern for the Texan side is that they don’t have a natural threat on the counter attack albeit they are structured and hard to break down. If I’ve learnt one thing in this league it is that Seattle postseason matches rarely go without incident but there isn’t a bet I fancy here either.

Toronto FC vs DC United (23.00)

In terms of form sides the match of the night is the third of the four as Toronto FC, unbeaten in 10 matches heading into the postseason, take on DC United who haven’t lost in their last five and haven’t conceded in that time either.

Both regular season meetings between these two finished all square and with the defences of both teams much improved in the last month or so we could be in for a long night at BMO Field. I’m tempted by the under here but there is a lot of attacking mite on the pitch to take on which makes me happy enough to swerve and watch what should be a great game safe in the knowledge I’m on DC United outright and can hope they win.

Real Salt Lake vs Portland Timbers (03.00)

The final match of a great day of action could actually be the best as Real Salt Lake take on Portland Timbers in a battle of two sides who know what it takes to go all the way to the MLS Cup final and win it.

Real Salt Lake are traditionally very strong at home but the Timbers have shown down the years that they can go on the road and pick up a result. They won at Seattle last season in an epic contest on their way to the MLS Cup final and will be able to draw on the confidence of that so I think we might be in for a fairly high scoring game here. RSL are in their element at home but the Timbers have goals in them. I’m happy to take over 2.5 here.
