The new format of the MLS playoffs has seen some outstanding football so far and we are set for more this midweek when the Conference finals are played across the pond, giving us two matches to determine the make up of the MLS Cup final.
The first Conference title to be decided is the Western Conference where the top two from the regular season meet as Los Angeles FC host the Seattle Sounders in what should be another electrifying contest.
Los Angeles FC
By virtue of winning the regular season Supporters’ Shield, Los Angeles FC have only played one match in the playoffs thus far and it was an absolute classic as they beat their city rivals LA Galaxy 5-3 in one of the best postseason matches we’ve ever seen. So much about that match was true to the LAFC philosophy of going forward and entertaining even though the fear of their season being over hung on the match had it gone wrong.
There is a feeling that the ropey defence of the Los Angeles side could come back and haunt them at some point between now and the end of the campaign, but the flip side of that is they have such a dynamic offense they will believe they can outscore anyone, which is pretty much what they have been doing throughout the season, and are showing no signs of slowing up in that regard just yet either.
Seattle Sounders
It isn’t just LAFC who have been involved in a classic match in this postseason. The opening game of the playoffs for the Seattle Sounders was one too when they saw off FC Dallas 4-3 after extra time. That further highlighted the credentials the Sounders have in the playoffs, something we’ve seen before when they have won this competition and made MLS Cup finals which they have lost. This is generally the time when their side comes alive.
The Sounders are renowned for rounding into form at this time in the campaign and their two postseason wins thus far suggest that is happening again. Key offensive players are in good form, not least Jordan Morris, who might think another MLS ring is written in the stars after all he has been through. Seattle can mix it defensively and rarely know when they are beaten which makes them a dangerous outfit.
Team News
It would be a surprise if Bob Bradley makes any changes to his line up after LAFC so impressively took care of LA Galaxy last time out. Adama Diomande scored twice from the bench in that match though so he could be pushing for a start.
The Seattle Sounders remain without Will Bruin who won’t feature again this season, even if they make the MLS Cup final Romain Torres is rated doubtful although indications are that he won’t quite make it.
Betting
What a Conference final we have on our hands here. We have the best team in MLS this season so far in LAFC taking on the team who always come alive in October and November in the Seattle Sounders. Something is going to have to give here and it will be fascinating to see who it is who will impose themselves on the contest enough to come through and make it to the final showdown.
I’m not going to speculate who that could be because I think we are in for a high scoring game here. That is the DNA of the LAFC side, but Seattle Sounders need no invitation to come to the party as far as goals are concerned. Both these sides have been involved in thrillers containing seven or more goals in this postseason and I just don’t see how Seattle can win this without being prepared to fight fire with fire. That’s exactly how I see this one playing out so over 3.25 goals will do me for a bet here.
