We finish week nine in the NFL season in the NFC East where two bitter rivals go at it at MetLife Stadium where the New York Giants will be taking on the Dallas Cowboys in the latest leg of this great rivalry.
The Cowboys head across to New York with a 4-3 record which is currently good enough for top spot in the division and they can enhance their stranglehold on it with a win here. The Giants are 2-6 for the campaign and building for next season.
New York Giants
Although they are 2-6 for the season, the New York Giants have probably shown that they are a little bit better than that. Their last two defeats have been by six points or fewer so they could easily have gone the other way and they would be 4-4 and looking to win this match to go top of the division. Although there have been some fine margins there is no doubt they are nowhere near the level required to win this division.
One of the reasons for that has been their defence, which has been gashed quite often this season and needs to improve for next term if they are going to make a challenge of any kind. The other reason for the struggles has been injuries to key players. They are slowly coming back though so it wouldn’t be a complete surprise if the Giants offer up a more competitive return of results over the remainder of the campaign.
Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys snapped a three game losing streak when they beat the Philadelphia Eagles in a key match last week but the fact they lost to the New York Jets in that run highlights just how Jekyll and Hyde this lot can be. They are going to need to be more consistent between now and the end of the campaign if they are going to make the postseason because you would think only the division winners out of the East will make it through.
Dallas are delivering the goods strongly on offense in terms of statistics at least. Dak Prescott is racking up the yardage as is Ezekiel Elliott and in the main their defence are delivering the goods as well so the Cowboys should be pretty confident heading into this match, especially with Amari Cooper expected to start despite concerns that might have to miss out with an unspecified injury.
Betting
I’m with the Dallas Cowboys here I have to admit. I don’t necessarily think the New York Giants are as bad as their record suggests but their defence worries me greatly against this vibrant Cowboys offense who have all bases covered and who have already feasted on the New York defence once this season already. I expect them to do that again here.
The question then for me becomes which market to play the Cowboys in and it is the point spread that I’ve gone with. I’ve gone that way because it is less than a touchdown and that seems acceptable enough to me. The Giants may offer something as the match goes on but I’m expecting Dallas to dominate the ball and with that the scoreline too. Dallas -6.5 does for me.
