The PDC World Championship gets underway inside Alexandra Palace on Friday night but before it does we have just enough chance to go through the four quarter markets, where there is a decent amount of value to be had.
The beauty of these markets are that we only need to find a semi-finalist to get paid out and we’ve seen a number of outsiders make the final four in the past, so we don’t necessarily need to focus on the favourites. We’ll begin with the first quarter.
Draw
(1) Michael van Gerwen v Jelle Klaasen/Kevin Burness
(32) Ricky Evans v Mark McGeeney/Matt Campbell
(16) Jonny Clayton v Ryan Joyce/Jan Dekker
(17) Stephen Bunting v Arron Monk/Jose Justicia
—————————————————————————
(8) James Wade v Ritchie Edhouse/Boris Koltsov
(25) Steve Beaton v Kyle Anderson/Xiaochen Zong
(9) Ian White v Darius Labanauskas/Matthew Edgar
(24) Max Hopp v Gabriel Clemens/Benito van de Pas
Preview
Given that there are 24 players in each quarter I have split the draw into the two halves so that we can see how the route to the quarter final could play out. The winner of the red section will face off against the winner of the green group in the quarter final where the cash gets paid out for us punters. The red section is headed by Michael van Gerwen and in truth when you think he has faced the other three seeds 41 times and lost just seven of those matches it is hard to see him not making the quarter final.
The green section looks much more competitive, and while the world rankings suggest that James Wade will face Ian White in the match to get into the quarter final, the German pair of Max Hopp and Gabriel Clemens could have something to say about that. If he can find his best form then Kyle Anderson is another who might make an impression while Darius Labanauskas could keep them honest.
Betting
Michael van Gerwen is all the rage in this quarter and it is hard to oppose him with any confidence but on the opening night he will face someone who has already played that evening and while he should beat Jelle Klaasen or Kevin Burness, it is a disadvantage to face someone accustomed to the stage. He will then go the better part of two weeks before his third round match so it is going to take a while before MVG feels in the tournament, therefore he could be vulnerable.
I’ll have a small bet for interest in this quarter and I’ll take the 25/1 on offer on Gabriel Clemens. He showed enough in a couple of the World Series events and indeed in the Grand Slam to suggest that he is getting acclimatised to the best stage and is bringing his best game onto it. The bottom half of this quarter is competitive without a standout so there is a route to the quarter final where hopefully someone has taken care of MVG and the German can take advantage.
