There are four more matches in the Championship on Wednesday night and with still absolutely nothing to be determined yet it is another big evening of action as we begin to enter the final week or what has been an incredible season.
Events towards the bottom of the table are very much in the spotlight on Wednesday, but the televised action focused on the race for the Premier League as Brentford look to pile the pressure on the two sides above them.
Wednesday’s fixtures are as follows (kick off and TV in brackets)
Brentford v Preston North End (17.00 – Sky Football)
Bristol City v Stoke City (17.00)
Birmingham City v Charlton Athletic (18.00)
Nottingham Forest v Swansea City (18.00)

Brentford have the chance to move to within a point of the automatic promotion places when they host Preston North End in the televised match to kick the evening off with. A win for the home side will move them to within three points of leaders Leeds United too. Preston North End are drinking in the last chance saloon in terms of their chances of reaching the top six though so they are unlikely to be pushovers in the contest in any way. Another team who are battling for the last play-off spot are Swansea City and they go to Nottingham Forest in a tight looking match.
The other two matches are all about the battle to avoid the drop. The first of them comes from Ashton Gate where Bristol City will look to continue their turning of the corner when they host a Stoke City side who eased their relegation fears at the weekend but who aren’t safe yet. The other match sees a rancid Birmingham City side, who look to be on the beach already despite not being safe themselves, hosting a Charlton Athletic side who are plummeting towards the drop zone and with Leeds on the last day and in form Wigan on Saturday, really need something from this game.
Betting
The price on Charlton Athletic is a very tempting one and they are probably the right bet but I can’t be backing a team who have only found the net three times in six matches since the restart. Birmingham City deserve the benefit of the doubt now they have got rid of Pep Clotet, even though life without him didn’t start too well at the weekend. I’m not going to ignore Bristol City however. They look overpriced against an overrated Stoke City outfit.
Stoke eased their relegation concerns at the weekend when they beat a terrible Birmingham City side but their only other win since lockdown was against Barnsley who are bottom of the league. They’ve been well touched off by Leeds, Wigan and Middlesbrough and could be there for the taking here. Bristol City aren’t playing for anything here which isn’t ideal I must admit, but they have clearly turned a corner under Dean Holden and he’ll want that to continue to boost his own managerial record. I can’t be having Stoke as favourites here. Bristol City draw no bet is the way forward for me.
