The last 16 of the French Open comes to an end on Monday when the last Grand Slam of the year heads towards the business end of the event across the main courts at Roland Garros in Paris as we get closer to crowning the winners at the weekend.
We now know we are guaranteed a new champion in the women’s draw with the remaining 12 players all maidens when it comes to winning this event. It is exactly the opposite in the men’s draw where the cream is rising to the top nicely.
Day 8 Recap
We finally got a decent day in the men’s draw on Sunday with Dominic Thiem being pushed all the way in a five-set cracker before coming through while the US Open finalist Alexander Zverev was sent packing in four sets. There were straight sets wins for Rafael Nadal and Diego Schwartzman. In the women’s draw there was a major shock as Simona Halep got thrashed, winning just three games in defeat to Iga Swiatek. Kiki Bertens was also sent packing in straight sets but Elina Svitolina avoided the carnage with a comfortable win.
It was another up and down betting day for us on Sunday. It began well when Jannik Sinner was never in danger of not covering his handicap when he won the first two sets against Alexander Zverev and then he confirmed it when he won the match. Unfortunately Caroline Garcia couldn’t follow suit as she was given a bit of a beating by Elina Svitolina to deprive us of a profitable afternoon in the end.
Philippe Chatrier Court
Once again we have four singles matches on the main court on Monday and it is the former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova who gets the action started. She meets Shuai Zhang who has gone largely unnoticed through a tough draw to date. When they are done the first of two very good men’s matches take to the court as Grigor Dimitrov goes up against the confident Stefanos Tsitsipas before the world number one Novak Djokovic meets Karen Khachanov in what should be the first true test of the Serb’s credentials in this fortnight. The action on the show court rounds off with Sofia Kenin meeting Fiona Ferro.

Suzanne Lenglen Court
Another tasty men’s match gets the show underway on the secondary court when Marton Fucsovics takes on the Hamburg Open champion Andrey Rublev in what could be quite a lengthy affair if both play to their best. There is only one women’s match on this court on Monday and it is the second match on show as Ons Jabeur meets the powerful American player Dani Collins. We go back to the men to close out the show when Pablo Carreno Busta will look to make the last eight of a second Grand Slam in as many months when he meets the German surprise package Daniel Altmaier.
Simonna Mathieu Court
It is mostly doubles on the third of the show courts on Monday with the number one seeds in the men’s draw among the teams taking to the court for quarter final action but it is the first game of the day where the sole singles match comes along here. It is a wonderful opportunity for the two players too as Laura Siegemund meets Paula Badosa with both women competing for a place in their first Grand Slam quarter final.
Betting
I’ll go with a couple of bets over the course of the day and they both start the action on the main courts. On the Chatrier Court, I like Shuai Zhang to remain within 4.5 games of Petra Kvitova. Kvitova hasn’t dropped a set in this tournament yet but I’m not convinced that her play has been quite as comprehensive as that and I fancy the Czech might get found out soon. She hasn’t been the most trustworthy of favourites in recent times and clay certainly isn’t her best surface. It might not be Zhang’s either but she has less to lose here and her better movement and shot variety can frustrate Kvitova. The danger for Zhang would be that Kvitova overpowers her but Madison Keys failed to do that earlier in the tournament so I’m not convinced the Czech will. Kvitova might get the job done here but I fancy the Chinese ace to keep within four games of her.
In the first men’s match of the day I like Marton Fucsovics to win a set against Andrey Rublev. The Hungarian star has been in good touch in this tournament so far and the only set he has dropped to date was in the first round when he shocked one Russian player in Daniil Medvedev. Rublev is in great form at the minute but I wonder if his recent exertions in Hamburg will catch up with him in the near future. Even if it doesn’t catch up with him here there is no guarantee that Rublev wins this match in straight sets. Fucsovics has won both their previous meetings so he’ll carry that confidence into this one where I expect him to win at least one set even if he doesn’t win the three he requires.
