The Sunday action in the NFL concludes with another divisional battle in the Sunday Night Football when the top end of the worst division in football takes centre stage as the Philadelphia Eagles host the Dallas Cowboys.
Someone is going to win the NFC East this season and based on the standard we’ve seen in it so far it will be a team with a losing record. That could easily be one of these two but whoever loses here might well find themselves needing snookers.
Philadelphia Eagles
Nobody in this division has looked any good this season but at 2-4-1 the Philadelphia Eagles are in a decent enough position to push on and take control of this division. Whether they will be good enough to go anything in the postseason is another thing entirely but the fact they have every chance of getting there is a reason to go full pelt even though like most teams in this league they are severely hampered by injuries.
One thing which could propel the Eagles to the division title, apart from the weaknesses in their opponents, is the quality of their defence which by and large has carried them throughout the campaign so far. The Eagles will hope to get offensive personnel back between now and the end of the season so they can be stronger when the business end of the campaign comes along. The other advantage they have is the best quarterback in the division after the injury to Dak Prescott.

Dallas Cowboys
It is that injury to Prescott which is the reason why the Dallas Cowboys are going nowhere. If that wasn’t enough they lost their backup quarterback Andy Dalton to a concussion last week and he has already been ruled out of this match so third choice starter Ben DiNucci will compete in his first Primetime game. He leads a side who are 2-5 but in this crazy season they will end the week on top of the NFC East if they win here.
You would have thought that Ezekiel Elliott would see a lot more of the ball since Prescott went down with his injury but that hasn’t really been the case. The Cowboys should look more towards him in this match both for yardage and to run the clock down and give their inexperienced quarterback an easier time of it, but they seem reluctant to use their star back. With the offense missing its two star triggermen it would be no bad thing if the defence can make plays.
Betting
It is hard to go against the Philadelphia Eagles winning this match but they still have too many injuries for me to back them, especially to cover a double figure point spread. In saying that though there has been nothing to encourage me to take the Dallas Cowboys even with such an inflated start so this is a pretty easy match to swerve as far as the match winner and handicap markets are concerned. Instead I’ll target the points market for a bet on the game.
The line for this match is up at 42.5 which looks a touch on the high side to me. Whether this is a close game or a blowout I’m not sure Dallas Cowboys are scoring many more than 14pts in this match and that is if they get anywhere near that which is by no means guaranteed. Philadelphia Union have too many injuries on offense to trust them to run up the score and the fact the division top spot is on the line here should make both defences play tough. Under 42.5 points looks good to me.
