2020-21 Sky Bet Championship – Wednesday 27th January Matches Tips and Betting Preview

The midweek action in the Sky Bet Championship concludes on Wednesday evening when another four games take place in the division as eight sides look to catch up having missed matches for various reasons to this point.

We have a big clash at the top of the pile and a couple that could affect things at the bottom ends of the table as well on an interesting evening of football, which unfortunately is one without any TV coverage.

Wednesday’s fixtures are as follows: (All 7pm kick off)

Barnsley v Cardiff City

Coventry City v Sheffield Wednesday

Middlesbrough v Rotherham United

Swansea City v Brentford

Preview

There is no doubt that the biggest match of the night is the one from Wales where third placed Swansea City host fourth placed Brentford in a match which will see the winners end the night in second place in the table and well on the path to automatic promotion. Elsewhere Middlesbrough will look to close in on the top six having missed out on the chance to go level with Bournemouth at the weekend. They host a Rotherham United side who sit in the bottom three but who can move to within two points of coming out with a win.

Sheffield Wednesday are also lodged in the bottom three although they have picked up in recent weeks and they will be looking to continue that upturn in form when they take on Coventry City at St Andrews in a match that you just feel is big for both sides. The other match on the evening sees Barnsley hero Mick McCarthy take charge of Cardiff City for the first time when he takes his Bluebirds side to yep you guessed it – Barnsley!

Betting

I’ll go with the one bet over the course of the evening which is on Sheffield Wednesday to come out on top against a Coventry City side who have suddenly seemed to have lost the art to score goals. I say that because the Sky Blues have only found the net in one of their last seven matches and it needed an own goal to set them on their way in that one too. Ryan Giles has been a key figure in the centre of the park for Coventry and he has been recalled by Wolves since their most recent match so you fear a little for the ‘home’ side here. I use inverted commas of course because Coventry play their home games on neutral soil.

Sheffield Wednesday have picked up massively since they got rid of Tony Pulis. You’ll find nobody here who is surprised with that but just when they looked to be building up a head of steam Covid-19 attacked the group and they haven’t played a league game since the opening day of 2021. Thankfully from their point of view they shook off the cobwebs in the cup on Sunday night and should be a lot better for that. New signings at this time of year always spark a place up a bit and Sam Hutchinson returning to Hillsborough looks like it has done that judging by the reaction to the news. You get the feeling that Wednesday are ready to have a good go at getting out of the bottom three, a position they are only in because of their point deduction, and if there is a winner here it can be them.
